One facet of the strength of our presidency is the degree of consensus required for Congress to exert itself in opposition to the president. Both impeachment and veto overrides are high hurdles.

Yep, you put my thoughts much better than I could have. And great quote! Hadn't ever come across that.

A presidential system is a design that has a strong executive. I agree that the presidency has grown stronger then intended, but it was always strong relative to other kinds of systems.

I think this is my take as well. Like, the web and smart phones and social media have transformed everything ... and also life goes on.

I'll echo the other reply: This seems like a bubble. I come across the AI-skeptical perspective in my real life frequently. I only really run into the "god AI" perspective here / among other people working in software.

That's a totally different point than the thing I was criticizing.

That is not at all the primary point of this article. This article focuses nearly entirely on the damage done by TikTok as a social media application, very much in keeping with the exact same criticisms the author makes of other social me

That's fine, but if you're going to post "now do X" in response to a criticism of Y, it behooves you to understand whether the author might have already opined on X.

You're totally right. I wouldn't have written what I wrote, if I had seen this comment before seeing the ten thousand other comments on this page that just say "whatabout {other social media app}". Not fair to the author

I don't know anything about Fentanyl, but something about this description seems off to me. If it's as easy to make as you describe, why wouldn't people just make it here already? Why are they taking the risk of smuggling it

Exactly. I think the more thoughtful responses are starting to bubble up to the top now, but when I first got here, essentially all the comments were of this form.

The author of this blog wrote a whole freaking book about exactly this! I feel like I'm taking crazy pills. How is this like 95% of the comments here, as if Haidt didn't write an incredibly well known book about how all of this is

The author of this blog is one of the leading proponents of this idea! I'm really starting to think all these whataboutism posts are bots. It just seems too hard to believe that so many people would come here to make this same idiotic

If you have read anything Haidt has written, you'll probably note that this implied criticism of him being only anti TikTok is quite far off the mark.

I think actually lots of people do care about all these problems. It's weird how so many of these threads are "whatabout other social media", when there is no contradiction in just saying "that too", and essentially

The author of this piece, Jonathan Haidt, wrote the book The Anxious Generation, which is very much about how all of social media is bad for kids (and adults, actually, but the book is more focused on kids).

The Nazi / Hitler comparison was always a poor fit, in my view. But what most people were actually saying was just "this person does not care about the laws and values that keep our government from being a tyranny". And what

That's not who this person was talking about. They were talking about the boring institutionalists on both sides of the aisle that edgy people have been scoffing at as "The Blob" or "The Village".

I'm sympathetic to your perspective that it's a broad cultural thing. But from my point of view, it's more of a demonstration of the problem with governments that are designed to have a very strong executive. Eventually you g
