Obviously ethics are on a spectrum. I'm pretty happy with my employer - a science-driven NGO using tech that's cheap to scale (telephony) with the aim of reducing poverty. Not perfect, but among other things I've been quite i

Not the person you're responding to but I do, or actually spacemacs does. The sequence would be $ -> J -> i -> ENTER -> ESC and I guess it's muscle memory. I agree that this kind of indentation might not make sense on

There is quite a lively tech scene. One example of an interesting all-African startup is Africa's Talking ( http://africastalking.com ). If you're looking for a problem to solve, one thing I struggled with when living th

I think one important component to the success of M-Pesa is Safaricom's near-monopoly on the mobile telephony market. If you are not the only big player in the market it's going to be much harder to get your mobile money network r

Yes I came here to post this one as well, together with Narziss and Goldmund and Steppenwolf - I read all of them in a pretty short period. There is a sort of common theme where Hesse explores the trade-offs between a life of thinking vs a

That's true and I think it's irresponsible. Even if the spread would be perfectly controlled and kept so that the number of patients in ICU stay below capacity, I don't think we can manage to get 60% of the population infecte

I can't say that I've followed what's going on in Belgium but I think that at the moment that's probably the wise thing to do. It sucks but even starting a lockdown right now the number of cases in ICU is likely to grow

I'm living in Sweden at the moment (am Dutch myself) and am quite disappointed with the response to the crisis. I live in a shared house (12 people) and many are still going to work as normal. One works in social services and sees doze

Started this course based on your recommendation, and agree that it's very good. A lot of mysterious stuff (repo, LIBOR, fractional reserve banking) is making a lot more sense to me now.

Do you have source for people over 65 being rejected? I read that there is some triage but this seems a lot more extreme than I imagined.

I was going to say that all my favorite courses were kind of unique, and didn't share any particular characteristics, but writing this comment I found they actually all share excellent problem sets and an engaging instructor. Having ta

Yes I think that makes sense. If you have real economic growth that can cause E to rise and through that mechanism P to rise. But even without economic growth, by reducing expected returns, you can keep E constant and get P to rise by incre

I've also been thinking along those lines - it seems logical to me that if you expect ~7% yearly profit that the P/E ratio should be around 14 (1 / 0.07) and that if the market is very competitive (lots of available capital,

Thanks for the explanation! I think it makes a lot of sense and I don't mind it at all. I was just surprised when I noticed the pattern at first, and was curious if HN was trying to reduce misinformation or what was going on.

I actually got the impression that HN has already been under-weighting those posts. I noticed that often virus submissions are sorted below other submissions with lower scores submitted longer ago.

Something to keep in mind is that you can't properly calculate the mortality rate if the cases haven't "completed" yet. Yes, a certain number of people died from the Diamond Princess spread (I read it's more than 6

I like your optimism and I hope you're right. I don't think Italy, South Korea, Iran are outliers in the sense that there is something fundamentally different going on there though - I think they are just ahead in terms of time. O

I don't know, Italy is doing pretty poorly with 79 dead on 160 recovered (2502 total cases). Only the numbers in China really seem to be dropping, and I wonder how that will hold up when people get back to work. This is not going to be
