It's not just one surveillance state ;) Most of these scammers are outside the UK, in India or Africa somewhere. Those countries do put a lot of resources into capturing 'Yahoo boys' and the like, but it's sometimes like

We worked a fair bit with the police, and I never got the impression we were frustrated with their inaction. They devoted a lot of resources to it, but it's part of the nature of the beast that there just don't need to be as many

Yeah, I'm somewhat familiar. I worked at a (fairly technological) UK bank, where we did investigations into scams like this. There's really not much that can be done about most of these scams, other than taking your multivitamins

The other problem is that this statistic is nearly meaningless. If I run a bank scam, I might have 500k victims, but it won't take as many police to investigate as 500k rapes or murders or kidnappings would. This is comparing apples wi

I would definitely agree with that claim, then. It seemed to me like he was making a far stronger claim, but it's very possible I'm wrong.

Ah, thank you, I didn't realise that and I appreciate the correction :) And yes, I agree with the main point. $100b was wrong, but Coinbase still overwhelmingly proves the rule: namely that, setting aside the few Bitcoin millionaires w

Ah, sorry I missed this. This is true in general, but I'd like to be able to control whether, and in what way, I 'load shed' comments. I also don't trust the design priorities of Twitter's logic which selects for me

This is a fair point. I suppose I just meant relative to most legislators. It's a very, very low bar - which is partly understandable, given their explicit job is to be the ultimate judge of a vast range of things in none of which they

I don't quite follow. Are you claiming the norm for money managers like investment banks and hedge funds is to lose their customers' money? And those customers don't care?

This is one of the truest things I've read in this thread. Many people would feel differently if it were easy to visualise and see how much money is siphoned off from Main St to Wall St. Dumb money flows up to smart money. I've se

I think the point is that no one knows which activities call for consent, or what all of their transitive dependencies do, and so they show it out of an abundance of caution. As should have been predictable by intelligent legislators, which
