I use uptimekuma (self hosted) and am very happy - it can text, or just about anything else - as long as you set it up. Also Tianji[1], self-hosted in the same space. Of course, these require setup and have to be hosted somewhere. Either an

I am convinced that I do not have enough data to be able to assess the "fittedness" of the entire Trump administration". And that is despite (or perhaps because) I have spent way way to much time reading articles both from th

The fact that Ansible doesn't allow feedback when a task is running, or give you access to the output of the task [it does give the response, but in a urlencoded json field that is useful but not friendly), makes it incredibly difficul

Off topic, but _why_ is it good that the gov gives hundreds of billions of dollars [if you include grants] to higher ed. I work in a startup where none of the programmers have been to college, and they seem to get along just fine. I volunte

I totally get why you do subscription. I totally get why I don't do subscription. Is there some sort of middle ground? Say, minimum purchase cost is the same price as six months, but it keeps on working afterwards sans updates. When th

Kinda like the kids who only learned to drive with Waze. When they are stuck without it, they get hopelessly lost. They feel strangled, distracted, and find it hard to focus on the road. For about 3 days. Then they pretty quickly get up to

I run my own mail server and use postmark for delivery. It is really inexpensive, I don't need to rely on Gmail for anything, and after setup has required almost no interaction for 10+ years.

Someone on HN recently compared AI to a really buggy GPS. People will still use it, since it mindlessly gets you on the road and looks like it knows what it is doing, which makes it the path of least resistance - and that will beat out bett

Caddy is good, especially for super simple static sites. As soon as it gets somewhat complex, the configs start becoming messy and opaque, eg. Nginx: rewrite ^/old/((\w|-)+) /new/$1.php; Caddy: @oldPath {
