Kodi does have bultin server functionality (both DNLA and a web interface), it's just less commonly used that way, and I don't think transcoding is supported without plugins.

I wouldn't say they're dead, just more hidden (e.g. GTK4 only shows them when you hold Alt). AFAIK most toolkits still support them, but app developers also have to actually define them.

I think the mouse wheel is mapped by default if you `set mouse on`? I also additionally map Shift-PageUp/Down in my config. And recently they added a `pane-scrollbars` option for a clickable ASCII scrollbar.

What conclusion do you mean? Aqua is just one of the many backends it supports. For example there's also the GitHub backend which lets you install binaries from releases, no plugin needed at all.
