I never had to moderate a community, but I that chronology makes perfect sense to me. I guess it is what it is then.

Fair enough, but can you imagine a CoC that suffices in any situation? You will have situations where someone is acting out and at the same time you didn't think of it in your CoC and you will still be able to identify the behaviour as

Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't know this conference was aiming to "solve all social issues" with their code of conduct.

I really don't get how and - more importantly - why we moved from a common sense of "don't be a dick to other people" to the need to spell out pages and pages of behavioural guidelines.

After reading the "code of conduct" on their homepage I would assume that you have unknowligly broken something like > "Using gendered terms like “dude” or “guys” to address a mixed-gendered group of people contributes to

Maybe edge case wasn't the right wording. What I meant was that in a discussion about whether x leads to y, saying "z could happen to you though" isn't exactly on the point.

Again, yes, people start their lives from different positions and it is obviously much easier to win the race if you have pole position in your dad-sponsored car than when you are the water boy. Still I'm not willing to just assume tha

You can also be uncomfortably poor, win the lottery and find your life suddenly becoming amazing through no fault of your own. You shouldn't use edge cases to discuss a general rule.

Rich people have it easier, that shouldn't come as a surprise to anybody. But on the other hand it shouldn't come as a surprise either, that if you make decisions that propagate poverty, you will be more likely to end up poor.

Yes, bad things happen to people. I absolutely agree. I fail to see how that statement is related to the article or my comment on it though.

I guess this turns the discussion around poverty into a 'chicken and egg' discussion. Which one was first? One's poverty or one's inability to make good life choices? So conservatives will say the latter and liberals wil

Yes, all of that, but particulairly because I want(ed) to make my own game(s). I actually took a detour via 3D modelling (Blender) for gaming and then becoming interested in writing my own Python scripts, so I learned how to code and forgot

I wonder if this can be interpreted as a future edge for distributed platforms like mastodon, where you might not find "the responsible person/company" right away?

I really hope we will be looking back at this moment in 3 years or whatever as the beginning of something big. We are long overdue to "myspacifiy" some of the current regents of the web.

No, I am talking about a literal keylogger actively installed on the OS. To their credit, after it surfaced they now provide a privacy option to "turn it off", but they still pretty much admit to spy on you every chance they get.
