My electricity use is 5kWh/day, which you're correct actually averages to 200W. My mistake. We have gas heat/hot water. My household's _baseline_ power usage is 100W, which is probably mostly the refrigerator based on so

Slow degradation is a common case, but a day with bad skew due to spam or other unusual activity can cause a previously optimal query plan to never complete.

I was able to install Windows onto a laptop that had been running Ubuntu only for years without any trouble using just a Windows installer USB. You don't need to save the original image, especially given it's full of crapware.

The benchmarks are meaningful for people who need to use that particular software. They also won't extrapolate well to software that is better optimized for ARM.

Induced demand actually does happen in American healthcare: spending goes up with healthcare availability, but health outcomes do not improve past a fairly low level of usage. This is a waste, not productive economic activity. https:/

We should just apply these same rules to driving, full stop. So many people are killed by inattentive drivers every year; even a short timeout from driving (15 min or so) in response to inattention would probably reduce these killings drast

GPL does not prevent users from distributing modifications: it simply requires them to give _their_ users the same freedom if they do so. The AGPL further updates this for the cloud era.

It's up to Republicans to find a way to appeal to San Franciscans. The bottom line is that they're deeply out of step with the city on culture war issues they themselves whipped up. Forcing women to give birth to corpses, legalizi

Roads alone cost $2-3M/mile and last 30 years. Amortized, that's on the order of $100k/yr/mile. In a city, that would be $100k / 10 city blocks, probably 100 parcels with 100-1000 low-to-mid rise housing units. In a

Basic economics says prices are set based on supply+demand not cost. Cost of course affects supply, but right now the main housing supply limiter in urban areas is restrictive permitting and to some degree lack of construction labor (a nati

Is it really an unreasonable expectation that you should be able to use the editor of your choice to build an app? Perhaps you're right that this is the case for niche platforms like macos, windows, certain embedded systems, etc, but f

Your argument about costs ignores the key fact that rural areas are far less productive than urban areas, and so cannot afford even the same per-capita rates as urban areas. As for the land value economics of multi-family development in rur
