Every startup requires some level of the Jobsian RDF to exist around the founders and extend to the core team. The problem is that, for most startups, the RDF will be threatened by real-world events (nobody is using/buying/investing-in you

I'm ok with them taking away a better hamstrung licensed product for a crappy one that will only get better simply because it probably had to happen at some point. Yes it's been obvious to Apple (and developers like myself since PR1), but t

I remember playing with one at Bell Labs in 82 or 83. The mouse was gigantic but looked AWESOME (black orb with red buttons). Not sure if the commercial version had the same issue, but it was slow, especially when spawning a new layer. F

We could save ourselves a lot of back-and-forth commenting by understanding that it doesn't matter whether this (or any) document on its own is damning or a smoking-gun. What matters is the totality of the evidence. That's what the Jury wil

In 2003 I began to supplement my contractor income by writing OS X apps as a sole indie developer and eventually went full time. In the first six years I made enough to live on. In 2008, mostly out of curiosity, I wrote a free iOS app and

Just to play devil's advocate, there is no such thing as "clearly falling under fair use." Fair use is always arguable and it's up to a federal judge to make that finding.

Conversation here on whether this would be a good acquisition for Google just got me thinking about Google's motivation behind Glass (a bit off-topic): 1) Google can (easily) make the argument that it needs to sample the image stream from e

IMO truly great developers are not just developers. They are also software architects, UX and UI designers, network engineers, etc. "A" developers knock down learning curves and assimilate everything about software creation innately .

The Scrabulous case alleged both trademark infringement (the obvious name ripoff) AND copyright infringement (the board and tile design).

Hasbro is a little crazy about defending their copyrighted board and rules (including point values, board layout, letter distribution), etc., so if WordBase gets any serious traction expect to get a letter.

Yes. If your business was acquired and you gave your investors a decent return, you won't (or shouldn't have to) bootstrap your next company, thus reducing your personal cost (and risk) the next time around.

Risk and reward are relative to your personal status quo. If you are gainfully employed, then leaving to start your own company has real cost (the opportunity cost of your lost income + the cost of your lost savings) and clear risk (the ri

The best approach I've seen for expanding APIs in iOS is the one Apple tends to use: pass a single NSDictionary of keyed parameter values. The API parameter list never has to change, it's guaranteed to be backwards compatible and you can s
