I was asked this question at a company (unicorn, but lower bar than Google, got the offer) and I only described #1. Thanks for calling me stupid though!

Are you at FB? One of them did tell me this after his round (said we got further than he thought we would), the other one explicitly said my solution was optimal and what he was looking for. The 2 questions per interview "rule" is

That’s because the FB process explicitly optimizes for speed. I recently finished a loop where I solved 2 problems optimally in 2 interviews and 1 in the last one and I was rejected. The speed required makes me skeptical many people can sol

How do I force myself to find doing those problems to be fun? To me they just seem painful because they really expose how stupid I am even if I know he basics.

I am Asian. Ironically my parents aren’t like me at all about this. They’re pretty relaxed and they would have been fine with me going anywhere as long as I was “happy”.

Wonderful article! I absolutely adore graphs just for this reason - you can solve a massive number of problems with a few tools. And of-fucking-course OP is at Google Brain.

I pay $2.9k a month in rent and utilities. I'm also going to take a wild guess and say you're working on a graduate stipend or aren't in the US.

Well, for one thing they can do it at 22, with no constraints on the function they're optimizing. Their hard work was done in 4 years of undergrad and 4 years of high school. I thought I did OK - but apparently I didn't, and now I
