If Brad Feld wanted to encourage entrepreneurship, he'd be bothering his Congresscritters about healthcare reform for 47 million uninsured, not making a special path to citizenship for a handful of people. Yes, we lose some startups because

Back in the day, they assumed that [x] number of workers would die and worked that number into the calculations. The St. Louis Arch, for example, assumed 13 people would die. Thankfully, we don't put such a small price on human life any m

I think that's only sometimes true. There are a number of well-written proscriptive essays where the author chooses to ignore paths that proved fruitless during her time drafting the essay. Furthermore, even personal essays can leave out

Essays are planned; papers are stream-of-consciousness. Readers can't follow the internal machinations of a particular writer's psyche; while you can have a revelatory essay, you still need to plan it. My best example: Woolf reads like str

Cute design ideas still require some semblence of competent execution. The "lines" are completely random. Of course they're going to be arbitrary, but at least try to be thematic about it. It's missing the AbeBooks acquisition, which is a

This is the difference between skeptical adults and students who've read Ayn Rand and think they've figured it all out. Well done.

I'm a bit surprised that they only have 40K users since SXSW. I mean, it's 1) a really great app and 2) "won" SXSW. There are certainly things I'd change about it if I were the PM, but only 40K users is a bit scary given how good the data

I scorn the Snuggie because those who own one are poor consumers. The Slanket is the better buy. "Get the Slanket if you're serious about staying warm while lying on your couch... Nobody anywhere should buy the Snuggie." (From Gizmodo: h

Yeah, I wish someone had told me this before. I just didn't know. However, one of the great benefits of Valley representation is the intros you can get to investors. Those investors tend to be local. Thus, the best situation is to be whe

At this point, my costs are sunk. There's no real benefit to moving pre-emptively - unless I can find a full-time developer who wants to jump into Dawdle. Then I'd move anywhere in the lower 49. (Sorry, Alaskans.) Yeah, I've been saying

I think it's different for an established company like Matasano where 1) there isn't the financial risk to the paycheck that characterizes a new startup (pre-funding) and 2) everyone around someone is working 60+ hours. The culture's alrea

Figure out and adapt a fundamentally different legal structure and this issue goes away. The cost of writing a law full of loopholes that allows hedge and PE funds to "look" like VC funds is higher than the added costs to firms like Atlas.
