We made this because of how much we drool over the python opencv package (cv2), but we didn't want to write as much c++ (here's the relevant file in opencv: https://github.com/opencv/opencv/blob/mast

I think this sort of thing is handy for reinforcing to people that neural nets are still just code, and should be treated as such. That means testing and reliability standards built into deployment. The last exercise in particular rams it h

The headline screams red flag to me. Calling something "machine learning-powered" isn't a guarantee of improved performance at all. Their baseline is already a fairly complex model, so there's no way to gauge how useful

It's not the most accessible, but it's pretty interesting. Turning a problem into its dual has always been a bit of a dark art to me, but this article makes the benefits of doing so reasonably clear.

I swear a few weeks ago I was reading the usual media outlets talking the prospect of this IPO up at the same time. Now this. It feels to me like someone got fed a line. Edit: wait, the head of Aramco is now a Softbank director? What on ear

For the uninitiated, what does this particular breakthrough enable? I understand the point it makes about being able to reverse a decomposition but don't get what the practical consequences are.

The Dune 2 soundtrack is still my favourite video game OST. Even allowing for the fact that it doesn't faithfully replicate the Dune universe (e.g. House Ordos exists in the game) - some of the music is great for looking at Dune throug

Why is Brian Herbert as lucid as this talking about his dad, but so terrible when trying to write a book following on from his work? Bit of a puzzle to me.

It's funny how prescient some of the people in the sixties and seventies were. I'd lump Alvin Toffler alongside Frank Herbertm personally. They both had a somewhat weird point about the future (Herbert was kind of looking at a mac

I'm still amazed at how tech culture seems to think that avoiding your weaknesses altogether is unambiguously good. Maybe to some extent makes sense, but as a blanket rule surely it just develops learned helplessness in people? Note th

This is kind of interesting, because import substitution was what Latin America tried more or less as a whole back in the 80s. It didn't work particularly well then, which leaves the question of what to do now?

The problem with headlines such as this is that the cost figure is not put in context. Specifically, "is the 55 billion worth it?", instead of just "doing this thing costs money".
