How many of these grants are going outside of already tech heavy areas? How many of them are going to coal country, or to the Rust Belt? It's great that they're doing this, but unless they're going to be doing it in the place

I've not seen any correlation between availability of engineers and how hard retaining efforts are. It really comes down to if management knows what they're doing, or has their head up their ass.

Getting fired/laid off in Topeka means you'll have a harder time finding a new job than you will in Seattle.

I feel this focus on valuations, and saying that Trello "failed" just because a bunch of people who were not involved with the company at all thought they should have hit a different number is truly bad for our industry. There is

They already have one distributed through the Play Store. That's the proprietary bits. The Support libs are open source, they can work without the Play Store, and different apps can have different versions of it.

Unfortunately, that seems to be the only way to get a reasonable baseline, given that Google has no way to actually update Android devices.

A good amount of the "key apps" are free anyway, so a lower margin wouldn't have helped there.

There are only so many hours in the day. And, given the choice between fixing bugs and adding features for the many users on Android & iOS, or taking a gamble on a much lower userbase on WP, I'd probably take the first one.

Sideloading is a thing on Android too, but it really doesn't attract a lot of devs or users. Most users stick to the stores, cause they don't want to go chase down and give their payment info to infinity different sites.

Do we? I mean, a netbook isn't that big, and it doesn't have the added requirement of always needing to work as a primary communications device.

Good luck to them, but getting the funding is only a third of the battle. Now it remains to see if they can build something that a substantial amount of people will want to use.

As someone who enjoys breathing clean air, they can't continue to mine coal. They just cannot. And I'm sorry they feel that way about their wages, but they have to continue to adapt.

That is an awful solution. Housing is already extremely expensive on most coasts. Adding huge amounts of people to that would make it even worse.

You don't have to run there. If you wanted to better your local community, you'd be working to better opportunities there, instead of decrying the idea that the economy is changing.

It's not tone deaf. It's tone deaf to not recognize that what these people want is a handout of it's own sort. They want to do the same stuff that they've been doing for the last 50 years. And it sucks for them, but that
