Though from the sounds of it, it doesn't work very well presumably because there is no outbound sales process - which is what this person is suggesting doing.

The purchasing department is the last place you'd want to call - purchasing is department people in the org. go through to buy things, not the other way around. You'd either want to talk to some senior in IT security or anyone abo

It's a big assumption though, and you need to spend 3 hours to find out what you are actually applying for.

Can you talk more about how you grant equity? Do you have vesting schedule for new hires? Also, how does the $10k salary cut for more equity work? do you grant extra equity for every year they take the cut e.g. 0.25% for every year they do

I used slicehost, though when it became rackspace cloud it became way more complicated. The main draw for me was the $5/month pricing combined with a $50 voucher they gave for black friday and they use SSDs. Even with all those benefit

I expect that $50k/day drops off pretty quickly (most I know stopped playing after a few days), if he give got that - it was after all a estimate.

How do we even know we are downloading the real iOS 7.0.6? - surely it downloads the new version using this library? Edit: it's also digitally signed

Ironpants seems to be game for people who thought flappybird was easy. Also, making a game where you tap the screen and often puts adverts there, seems like a way to get a lot of click throughs.

At school I had much the same type of machines which I could program on, though in my final year as they moved to windows, pretty much any possibility of programming was taken away due to the system. I visited a school the other day, all th

The problem here is that (in the UK at least) kids come out of school knowing nothing about about a computer works or programming - windows/mac/ios/android increasingly hide this from you. Kids think that programming a comput

I think the main problem is cost, Amazon's costs prevent startups like Everpix from existing as does it for video startups and various other startups that require a lot of storage. I think Digital Ocean's disruption of the very es

That assumes that you don't think enterprise drives are just marketing ploy, to get execs to part with more of their money for no real benefit.

I wish Backblaze would provide some sort of Amazon S3 competitor, Amazon always seems very overpriced.

Isn't this just an effect of supply and demand? with so many people wanting to be actors or musicians, working for almost nothing, how can you compete in that market if you don't love it?

I doubt any spinning disk buffer writes, it's risky and requires a battery to prevent corruption. However most enterprise RAID systems buffer writes so it could be happening there.

You could move some of the pics to your own server, leaving AWS to handle growth in storage only. The raw costs could be very significant, though most likely you would need another person to create that system make it fast, which in SF prob

Oh it looks like I'm a bit out of date, it took years but I can see they now support this. Of course this comes at the cost of being less secure (giving away the used block locations), though it shouldn't matter for this use case.

As a DO customer I find this completely unexpected and unacceptable. Secure delete should be always done before transferring to another customer, if this takes time it should scrubbed as queued job, before the next customer gets it.

The problem with encryption at that level is that trim no longer works as there are no longer any zeroed blocks - so writes are slower. Also there will be more write applification as every write will cause a block to be erased.

I've found that the Intel 320 drives are much than the Samsung 830/840, Crucial M500 when setup for sync writes on Linux (as a NFS server) - with the Intel drives being about 4x faster than the others in my testing.
