I wasn't implying he had done the wrong thing particularly, graphic redesigns can be expensive and it's not clear how much value they add, he has clearly avoided them. In my own experience I've found if you don't make at least small changes

It's funny, if Hacker News was the product of a startup it would have been redesigned, A/B tested and tons of features/tweaks added. Any growth would be seen as the result of those actions, however HN has grown anyway despite being stagnent

TV clearly sucks at the moment. Why can't I watch any movie ever made at the touch of a button/tablet? Why can't I watch any series produced in the U.S. (or anywhere) as soon as it's available from U.K. (or any non-US country)? Why do [in t

I don't think these product categories can last forever, they've had 3 massively disruptive products since Jobs returned in my view (and many others) iPod, iPhone & iPad. iPod sold really well, but it peaked in 2008, it's unlikely to ex

In the grand scheme of things, it's better for Microsoft that you pirate Office than use something else - so really you are not punishing them for their mistake by doing that. Your continued use of Office, will mean people can continue send

The $.50 off a chocolate bar may actually cost you money, since it will encourage you to buy the chocolate bar when you weren't planning on buying one at all. In fact worse than that, it may start a habbit of buying those chocolate bars.

If that's the call to action, it's the worst I've ever seen. The signup page doesn't even look like it has anything else to scroll down for.

You gain customers by making them happy, maximising profits often does the opposite, but you hope most won't leave as you make the service worse/more expensive.

When I saw the title (not living in the U.S.) I thought 'darn fast' would be the next advert break after it happened. Surely this type of ad could be pre-approved, since they only bit that will change is the sports footage, which has alread

That assumes that all of the apps are attempting to be businesses in their own right. There are loads of apps which simply support some other business, such as a shop, venue, sports team, TV programme and so on (typically those are free). A

Lots of people don't get to work on cool stuff at work, but they get paid and work in a convenient place for their life situation. A lot of people have energy to give to open source because they get something out of it that's not money. Mos

TBH, it's very optimistic to think that anything really will change in the HN code. People have suggested tons of improvements and nothing ever changes - perhaps it shows that even if we don't improve our products people still keep coming b

The point is that they were not good enough for the task. For example I had several "smartphones" before my iPhone and really browsing the web was so much of a pain that, if you were near a computer, you'd turn it on wait 5 minutes for it

Lots of business users only need smartphones or tablets day-to-day where previously they needed laptops, they don't want to carry a laptop all day and now make do on a smartphone so they do. Given a limited budget I'd expect they'd choose a

A threading system doesn't help you with that, the web request will have died by then. Use a queuing system if you want to do that, just as you should do in other languages.

Why would you want multithreading in PHP? If you require multiple remote I/O there is Curl. If you require more than one CPU per web request you most likely doing something wrong. Multithreaded code is hard to get write, hard to code and ha

I think the problem is the boss manages, say, 10 people. Someone points out that the work of those 10 people can really be done by one person part-time and now the boss is redundant because no management is really needed anymore.

Can't help but think this isn't higher up on HN now because it's a video. In summary, sell to women, they have money, will spend it and few companies sell to them. Also the video is hilarious.
