I suspect the advent of recorded sound has had a huge effect on slowing down the drift or oral languages as well. Just think, in the 1930's people wouldn't really know what people sounded like in the 1850's, unless they had a

I've got a Windows phone, and sometimes I feel like the gradual decay of its ecosystem is a blessing in disguise. Since app support is spotty, I'm relegated to sticking to the core features only (Edge, maps, music player, texting,

What about this analogy? You have a piece of paper with a street address on it (the pointer value). You go to that street address (derefence the pointer), open the mailbox, and inside is another piece of paper with what you're actually

There's support for >260 char path lengths now without the \\?\ prefix, but I think you need to modify the registry, plus the application needs to opt into the new behavior via a setting in its manifest.

I think cool tech stretches farther back than that. Sure us Gen X engineers didn't have the Internet growing up, but we had Star Trek, Star Wars, the space shuttle, arcades, Apple II's, etc to inspire us to become engineers. And d

I write Perl scripts for Windows and Linux, and I don't find portability to be especially onerous. Of course there are platform differences to keep in mind, but is that any different from any other cross-platform scripting language?

SMS is already available on Win10 desktop, but it's confusing to setup (I think it involves tying your SMS messages to Skype on Win10 mobile, at which point you can see and reply to SMS via Cortana on your desktop)

This sort of sounds like the Europa Universalis series, where history affects the various countries you can play. There's nothing stopping you from trying to reverse the decline of Byzantium upon the onslaught of the Ottomans, but the

It's not, unfortunately. But how are you "keeping the lights on" with your old MS Fortran based code? Still using an ancient Powerstation? compiler, or Compaq Visual Fortran, or ... ?

Sounds like your IT department botched the wrapper. Wouldn't a more successful candidate likely just have used an abstraction layer between the .net conventions you were expecting and whatever the native code was doing?

But isn't that the case with basically ANY programming language? Once its use becomes widespread, escaping the confines of the highly skilled early adapters, you can be sure a whole lot of dodgy code will be written in it.
