Just subscribe to the data that you care about. For example, Meteor.js does exactly this by giving each client a slice of the production db locally, but only the part that they subscribe to.

True, there are certainly exceptions. I wouldn't want this on a social network, but something like a browser based 3D modeling tool is another story.

I did the rails 3.0 version of this tutorial about 2 years ago. Highly highly recommended. It almost single-handedly got me into web development and I certainly wouldn't be where I am today without it. Many thanks mhartl.
