Written two years before he published "1984", Orwell's piece is maybe more relevant than ever. (cf. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=10449660 )

I think you're all missing the point. For a lengthy elaboration, please read this classic from 1946: http://www.orwell.ru/library/essays/politics/english/e_polit... The choice of language isn'

The equality remains true in the pure, absolute sense. The scenarios you cite are cases where it appears to be violated, but the equality works out anyway. For starters, money is not investment or savings, it's a way of keeping account

Like all of professor Pettis's posts, this one requires pretty deep background or a lot of reading to follow completely... But it's well worth it. If you think you understand what's going on in China's economy, you shoul

In other words, in addition to a basic guaranteed income, we should consider universal health care and public education. I agree with that collection of policies, based on my understanding of current economic thinking and research.

What I'm hearing you say is this (correct me if I'm wrong): You are resistant to early, empirical results that poverty causes negative outcomes for children, and you will require stronger evidence to overcome this resistance. Fair

Neither can I. Nor can I tell if it's some referendum on the state of the tech industry. But it definitely makes me hungry for some avocados. Perhaps I will go eat one now. Or spend hours googling how to cultivate an avocado tree.

I met Ben Kaufman at TED, when he was working on Kluster. It didn't impress me then and Quirky never really impressed me either. Kluster itself was, well, a cluster* at TED. They didn't really have a good idea or execution, and

Wow, that's a strong statement. (Are we using the same definition of materialism?) I use it to mean that there are no outside forces describing the state of the universe beyond what's materially measurable/describable; in ot

So, in a nutshell, the phrase 'It is only determined when one party looks at it' is the definition of non-locality. If the two parties are separated by a significant distance, that implies that one viewer (Alice?) determines what

I heard at a VR conference that the CV1 is likely to use the Note 4 screen, but that's hearsay. I had stronger confirmation that it will at least be the same resolution... the Note 4, S6, etc all are 2560 x 1440; we were hoping for 4k

No, it's significantly better. The headset has MEMS sensors running at 1 KHz (the Note 4 runs at 100 Hz IIRC), which means the head-tracking is perceptually flawless. Add to that the quality of the optics, the high quality screen, the
