Good review of current practices, though I personally reserve the use of the term 'light field' to representations that are explicitly encoding light rays, not geometry. But that's a pretty minor quibble, it's a really g

Question for the field: what's the connection (if any) between late stage private valuations (Zenefits, Theranos, etc) and early-stage startup investing? Seems most popular discussions conflate the two, but it seems like they're w

I dunno, that's a lot of causal links that aren't necessarily backed up by quantitative analysis. I don't think the scale of VC/PE in the tech sector is anywhere near large enough to have macro effects. (Zenefits and The

Keep in mind that most prognostication re: the Trump campaign has failed. That's the trouble with inductive models; there's always the potential for some event that could happen that hasn't happened yet, and it breaks your mo

You need multiple cameras seeing every image point so your CV algorithms can have a good depth reconstruction -- and so it doesn't break if one camera has a lens flare. >2 viewpoints also helps with reconstruction ambiguities, etc.

I'm torn, because I don't really want to dignify this comment with a response... but here goes. Your 'concern' for trans* people is transparently false, or at least misguided. I don't see how allowing someone to liv

Quick caveat, this is written by the same firm (Digi-Capital) that came out with a totally preposterous estimate (on the high side) for the market potential and uptake speed of VR. So, you know, grain of salt; the Digi-Capital numbers were

No. Part of what you're paying for is access to the market; furthermore, without this logic, you have a race to the bottom for low corporate taxes (for any companies that deal in IP, which is eventually most nontrivial ones). The resul

I think it's okay to be disgusted by the outcomes of homelessness -- that's a natural reaction, and I imagine it takes a lot of empathy for those who work with the homeless to be able to see past it, to the people they're try

I think it's funny we're saying someone who can't afford $50k/year in rent is 'lower middle class.' If you keep your housing costs below 25% of gross income (a common recommendation), then anyone earning less t

I have a related quibble: a lot of companies are called 'tech companies' when, in fact, they're consumers of technology, not producers of them. If your primary innovation is business model, and all the interesting tech you en

The main problem is a devalued currency stokes inflation, so consumer costs go up (so do producer costs, but that's offset by better export earnings). China is in the middle of a shift from an export-driven economy to a consumption-dri
