While I certainly think a bad environment can make people perform worse, I'm not sure the reverse is true. There are just some people who don't give a shit regardless of the awesome trusting environment you give them.

I thought this was going to be a lame "I had that idea and told it to them at a bar" kind of thing. But it seems like it was more then just his idea, and he was involved in the initial version of the app. (The ghost icon makes so much mor

I think all developers have to do something like this at some point to get the compulsion I have which is backups to the extreme. I can never have enough backups. Any DROP/ALTER type change I make a backup. (And also learned to pretty muc

I'm always curious how Rhapsody gets left out of these conversations. It's been doing what Rdio and Spotify are doing since 2004 (or earlier?). I've tried them all but continued to stick with Rhapsody if for nothing but superior music sel

You've worked at a startup? Documentation is usually the last thing people do unfortunately, at least in any kind of useful way. Sometimes there was documentation, but when only 10 people in the world are using a language there ends up be

Same here, the main problem lately is they don't have enough pairs to send out (you frequently see that a pair isn't available for at-home). Hopefully this money will build their inventory significantly.

I've always believed this, of course then I worked at a company that wrote it's own programming language for it's product, and there was nothing to Google for (I still don't understand why they did this but stay with me). In that environmen

My point is that having someone work a day for free would be great in any industry, but somehow only we in tech tolerate this, why is it different?

Pretend it's not tech, and Starbucks interview consisted of you working as a barista for a day, or Goldman Sachs wanted you to trade stocks for a day, etc...

That was my favorite takeaway from the article, that there is not the irrational paranoia of child kidnapping that exists here in the US. I mean what would someone do with a stolen child anyway? Unless you are rich there is little odds of

It's an existing investor solidifying a deal. Kind of like if you bought a stock at $40, and now it's down to $20. You look at the company and think "OK, maybe our initial investment was at a high valuation, but I think think there is a g

Just to clarify you are not winning anything free here (still an amazing opportunity though): "Explorers will each need to pre-order a Glass Explorer Edition for $1500 plus tax and attend a special pick-up experience, in person"

So if given the choice between the two, you are picking a slightly happier life in a country where you will not live to age 30? Interesting.

You can talk about happiness, but even the poorest people in the US still have access to basic sanitation and clean drinking water, and (usually) a roof over their head which is not something you can say for many poor people of the world.

There are a whole other set of stereotypes males in traditionally female roles have to overcome. They don't match your set, but they exist. For example male flight attendants and hair stylists are assumed to be homosexual, and male nurses

It's also always amazing to me how few people upvote an article. Like something on the front page getting tens of thousands of votes, that people clearly like, and usually only a few hundred can be bothered to click a little arrow.
