See pidgin.im/plugins for modern protocol support. As for version 3, yeah turns out that things take a very long time a tiny team that has zero financial support.

I assure you stuff like OSCAR (the protocol for AIM and ICQ) is anything but simple and was a huge effort by many people to reverse engineer.

Pidgin is a universal client that supports many protocols/networks including IRC, XMPP, and has additional third party plugins from stuff like Discord and Slack.
