From thefreedictionary.com: "A normative or prescriptive set of rules setting forth the current standard of usage for pedagogical or reference purposes." That sure sounds like what the original article was talking about. Some quibbles with

So stupid it hardly warrants comment. So if there is no one famous on your flight, it doesnt fly? OTOH if your first passenger is a world famous terrorist, the problem solves itself. You have a plane full of terrorists; just shoot it dow

My point is that there are enough laws that a determined prosecutor can get you on something even if he cant on the big crime. Perhaps Capone is not a good example because he committed a lot of crimes that we all think deserve jail time.

It's the Al Capone gambit. Capone was not jailed for his criminal activities, but for not reporting the income from them. Martha Stewart went to jail, not for insider trading, but for lying about it. My guess is that this particular piec

I think it's more a matter of strong moderation. HN is a strongly self-policing site and it works very well here. Drive by commenting doesnt make it. Another site with a high signal to noise ratio is Charlie Stross's http://www.antipope.

The answer is very simple. Invest in companies that pay dividends, like telcos, electrical utilities, steel mills, railroads and other giants of the the 20th century. Note that you wont get any stock appreciation to speak of. Tech compan

Jacob, I think you are reading more into it than he said. As far as I can see, he said, if you find it online give a link to it. He didn't even go so far as to ask for a citation if it's not on line.

I think it was a reasonable discussion, it just had some faulty conclusions. Using binary trees for overflow buckets is silly. They may be O(N), but the O can be much larger if you keep them balanced. A much better strategy for dealing w

You cant have fighter jet reaction times when people are walking around inside the planes. Also you have clear air turbulence, wind shear and all kinds of nasties up there.

Replication is important because initial results are often wrong because of misinterpretation of the results, experimental error, or experimenter bias. Others in the field want to make sure their work is on strong ground.
