A more reasonable proposal would be for someone to pull a netflix; $1 million or even a $1o million prize for a significant advance in search relevancy. $10 million would be cheap for MS, Yahoo, ASK, a VC, or even DARPA.

My SO has serious medical problems. Shouldnt I be able to leave her the house and some means of support. Most inheritances are fairly modest. Taking them away would only hurt the majority with little benefit to anyone.

I flag occasionally for spam or off-topic HN-wise. I have been tempted for those that hijack other stories without much of anything in the way of commentary, but HN'ers tend to quickly post a link to the original.

I think a "Did you mean this?" flag would be useful. Sometimes I find I make a post that could use a little rewording that would make it clearer or less confrontational. I am prone to calling OP's crap (not comments). Perhaps I should ap

Layman to layman: it's light that hasn't reached us yet. Light that left alpha centuri last week wont get into the cone of visibility for another 4 years. During the period of inflation after the big bang some parts of the universe got s

It may be that I am working with a small sample size, but giving the full freedom of Java as in jsp's to view writers leads to horrible code. The logic is a tangle and the pages are nearly unreadable, due to the differing layout needs of J

I thought I would try a couple of the suggestions here. What I was looking for was criticisms or alternatives to (Java) exception handling, an interest of mine. ArXiv may have the the paper but their search interface is pretty primitive.

I agree with you, but designs are often constrained by what the tools expose or consider important. Believe me you dont get consulting jobs by saying Java inheritance is over-rated and that maybe more functional and less OO would be a bett

Well, I figured out the first and third parts. So the the Sieve of Giraffes returns every number. I guess the next step is to include it in the Java library.

What boggles my mind is that people will work for $20/video, $15/article, or 8 cents to proof a headline. OTOH the video guy has shot 40,000 videos. I would like to think that, even with all this crap at the bottom, there will still be ro

Think of it as a reputation builder. Give it away. If it turns out to be a blockbuster, you can always come out with a premium version to sell. Think freemium.

I dont think so. Sure, the signal to noise ratio is declining on the web, but we dont have to depend on Google to deliver things that interest us. I think HN is a reasonable model for a filter. Sturgeon's Law certainly applies here, but

I use UltraEdit32 for everything but Java. It's feature rich, highly customizable, and works the way I do. For example it supports cross system editing via ftp or ssh. For Java, I use eclipse. The interface is non-intuitive, but the numbe

No, hashing is part of the O in O(1). For pathological cases O(n) could be faster than O(1), but fast hashing is fundamental to Python performance, so I expect it to be fast.

Agreed. Screencasts are linear at the presenters pace. Documentation can be skimmed or probed randomly. Often I dive deep to see how a particular issue is handled. All too often screencast production qualities are terrible: lighting suck

It would be a good thing too. Sarbanes-Oxley is so onerous that it has killed the IPO market for small firms. IIRC $3-5M in legal and accounting fees for the IPO and yearly 7 figure amounts for compliance.

Consider yourself lucky. You could have been taught ISO-9000 or something from the Software Engineering Institute. The way things go now, three classes and you would have missed a release cycle.
