There has never been copyright for design. Copyright for source code and for binaries works quite well for protecting software from wholesale copying, piracy notwithstanding. Software ideas are a dime a dozen. The real protection comes

I am rather fond of the jQuery style of chaining method calls, which doesnt work if methods return status codes. OTOH I dont like checked exceptions at all. Mainly because development teams go overboard with an exception for every type of

Rejoice Calendar Geeks. There are fewer of us even than those who really understand Haskell monads. It's obvious that the Java/Calendar classes were implemented by people who were not calendar geeks. (I once implemented a date package tha

I think a development team needs to ask itself if the api is stable and has a stable team behind it. Example Java libraries. If so, use it. If it has a company like Google or a small open source team, then protect your self by isolating

Back in the days I did a lot of assembly programming for the CDC 6400/6600 computers. The instruction set was simple, but processor flow wasnt. IIRC there were 3 or so integer units and 1 floating point unit. If a result wasnt ready when

The company where I work gives "surprise" four day weekends by giving Friday off for several of the three day weekends, a nice bonus. The article is really about the 4 day workweek: 4 10-hour days, which makes a lot of sense for most people

Ah the merits of off-the-books weekend work. I had a badly rutted moderately long driveway with drainage problems. One Saturday a Caltrans operator brought his grader over and for $1200, including a couple of truck loads of crushed rock,

SQL should be in every programmer's bag of tricks. True, it's not Turing complete, but what it does, it does well. I classify it as one of those mind stretching languages. It forces you to think in sets, and complex queries have very muc

Web type jobs are in SF. The Peninsula has web jobs and non-web jobs but still cutting edge. The East Bay much less so. I would NOT recommend commuting from Berkeley to Palo Alto. I've lived in all 3 places and much prefer the Palo Alto

The article succumbs to the fallacy of predicting the future from current trends. To give you an example, here are some things that didnt exist 50 years ago that were life and culture changing. Personal computers, the internet, cell phone
