I concur. If you are doing web or app development, all you need are some non-tech reviewers to keep from making stupid mistakes. If you are looking at the enterprise space strlen's advice is sound. What you really need is an adviser with

A couple of decades ago, I first ran into the professional incompetent, someone who can have 8-10 years of good experience without having accomplished anything. She (sex means nothing, just tweak the adjectives) was attractive, intelligent

Count this as a downvote. :) If I see an apparently braindamaged comment from patio11 or RiderofGiraffes, I at least reconsider whose brain is damaged, mine or theirs?

Make the display of points optional. I find them useful in finding comments to look at on long discussions. I use upvotes to signal interesting comments, but I rarely do it on comments that have large upvotes. Now I am inclined not to up

The Feds (of some color) are investigating private schools that screw students, but I suspect that the best outcome we will get is a slap on the wrist with no relief to those who were swindled. It is probably true that all for-profit schoo

Good call. One of commenters is Tony Wasserman at CMU who is one of the fathers of Software Engineering who tells why he worked to separate SW from CS.

I've done recent contract work in both SV and LA. I would say SV/SF pays 10-15% higher. In addition the work in SV is much more interesting to me and probably other HN types than the work in LA. Within the Bay Area the arc from Berkeley,

I agree with you Peter. I came to C after a decade using Pascal (assembly, "systems" languages before that). It was like going from programming in a straitjacket to running shorts and a T shirt. The freedom was wonderful. And programmin

I guess I could ask a HiPPO and then validate the answer with A/B testing. OTOH, if I am the highest paid person present, do I just guess, or do I guess and validate it with A/B testing?

Nearly every gig has been over $50K with the most being $250k for 12 months. Most of my work has been in Silicon Valley with a couple of telecommuting stints in LA and Chicago (which lasted for a decade). Most gigs have been with companies

I've found that small companies,100 or so people, with shipping profitable product are a good fit. They are small enough that an individual developer has an impact, but they dont have the stifling bureaucracy of larger, especially public,

As an American I dont think a handshake = touching. A handshake is such a common ritual that I barely notice it. If someone touches me on the elbow or wrist, I am instantly aware.
