I'm going to start asking this in every HN review request: what's it written in and how well is the technology working for you?

Agreed. The only reason I'm even considering the iPad at this point is for its battery life. 5 hours is a deal killer.

Rails != Ruby. Play ( http://www.playframework.org ) successfully replicates the Rails experience in Java (finally). What Rails did was introduce a new way of thinking about pragmatic approaches to developing CRUD web apps. While ruby apolo

We run an large ERP system against PostgreSQL with its default settings. It handles the load admirably, even with over 4000 users hitting it concurrently. I've never felt the need to tweak it.

I'm spending a good bit of time with play! ( http://www.playframework.org ). It's Rails for Java, only more.

I'm not projecting anything on others. You essentially called Linux unusable rubbish. I merely posted to state emphatically that it's not.

No. Consulting on the side allows me to keep my skills sharp on the development side. I am a coder and entrepreneur at heart, and being a CTO by day doesn't provide a lot of hands-on coding opportunities.

Apparently you live in an alternate universe. I've been using Linux for my desktop OS since 1999, and Ubuntu since 2004, and it's been a consistently great experience. Sure, there are warts on occasion, but that's true with all OSes. Ubuntu

Definitely looks interesting...I'm going to dive deeper. They really, really need a site re-design however. :/

Has anyone come to play from Rails (as I have)? Is there anything you miss from Rails?

I'm curious...can you describe a servlet-based component that you might want to reuse? As I've been doing Ruby mostly for the last few years, I'm struggling to think of an example.

Well, glad you're paying attention, but that's not correct. Play escapes everything for you by default, just as Rails 3.0 does now ( http://www.playframework.org/documentation/1.0.1/releasenote... )

Ask HN: Is anyone doing any significant work with the play framework?

I'm curious...what do you find Gmail does better than Zimbra?

Did it for years. Loved it. The only problem? Hosting providers and colos often reuse IPs that have been blacklisted because of spammers, so one day you realize some folks just haven't been getting your mail. I use a leased server and would

http://www.zimbra.com . Better in some ways, worse in others, but by far the most capable open source webmail available. I used it for a few years and loved it.

That's like saying Toyota steals from Ford because it puts four tires on its cars in roughly the same position. Sometimes design happens just because it makes sense. I see no theft here.

Is Duby really ready for production yet? The twitter posts referenced are blocked, but it appears at least someone is using it for production stuff. Anyone else?

I'm one of those that purchased RubyMine. As a long time NetBeans user (for Ruby and Java), there were some features in RubyMine that just worked better. I thought the price was worth it. However , after using it for a few months, I can sa

Wouldn't the challenge in ruby be the prevalence of things you just can't and don't do in PHP? Thinks like instance_eval, class_eval, etc....in Ruby projects I've worked on (and especially in Rails), these are all over the place. Of course,

I do a fair amount of Rails, so I'm really curious here. How could it be that they've so heavily patched 2.0 that they can't move on? Anyone from Twitter care to comment? I've worked on many Rails apps, and have upgraded the apps from versi

At least Google Groups doesn't expose your email address to the world, while it appears Librelist does (check out the archives here: http://librelist.com/browser/ ). If you're on a librelist list, you're asking to be spammed.

I'd like to see the date the actual cheatsheet was created...not just added to the site. A javascript cheatsheet from 2001 is likely to be much different than one from 2007. Other than that I love the site!

The primary barrier for me is that every time I look at Scala, I think that this must be what a Perl and Java love child would look like. Granted, syntax isn't a (sole) reason to discount a language, but gawd some of the code examples look
