On the contrary, I mostly get spam from yahoo and gmail addresses. Microsoft is pretty rare for me to see in spam.

I had this observation the other day with the HN post about Mr. Beast. Never heard of that guy before that article. That said, if the internet is at least in part a reflection of humanity’s interests, this isn’t surprising. I’m confident th

Most systems that are connected to the grid require it by local code from what I've read. When the city did the inspection on my system after the contractor finished up installation, one of the things they checked is that it was on an

This world - the one you exist in right now. I say that as someone that wrote C++ for 10 years before moving to Rust. Rust was by far easier. That said - that’s an extremely biased statement and I recognize that. I think it was largely the

Scala the language is fine. Not my favorite - it’s a little conceptually big for my taste but that’s a preference thing. Scala the ecosystem was never fun though. I can’t decide if it’s worse than JavaScript (NPM upgrade hell sucks hard).

Bob has either outgrown that company or needs a vast increase of scope. If scope increase, figure out how to coach him because it won’t click initially. That said, if I were his manager I’d be trying to help him find an opportunity outside

Lack of autonomy and lack of clear goals. I’ve quit one job over both of those. Almost quit my current one but then got a lot more clarity after a couple of raw 1:1’s. Was good in the end. Going to see how it shakes out.

The thing most folks don’t realize is that Computer Science isn’t Software Engineering. They’re related but distinct. Software Engineering is a lot of the day to day work you do as software engineer. It’s more about people, process, executi

The goals don’t need to be minute and fine grained. They could be as simple as “onboard 20 new customers by December 15”. From there, you build whatever is necessary to capture 20 new customers.

Generally, everyone should have clear goals - use OKR’s if you want for this. If the goals are clear and time bound, then execution be straightforward enough. The trick is what to do if things don’t go according to plan. I generally ask my

I’ve avoided work events basically my entire career and have not had issues with career advancement or development. I reject the idea that they’re somehow mandatory in tech. Many of my friends have similar experiences.
