What's a generalist, if not full-stack? What would you be doing/want to do if hired in such a role with your current skill set?

Thanks for sharing! Have you tried any other options, like using puppeteer or similar tools? I'm curious about the performance (time, CPU) of the library you chose, as I had issues with weasyprint and great results with puppeteer.

I'll take "all services are down, we need to fix it now" over any job interview. At least I know what the problem is, where to start looking for causes, and probably how it can be fixed.

Yes! I'm so pleased to see this, only because I had the same idea and went ahead and implemented it with playwrite. I also added the ability to add annotations, ie overlayed text, and outlines, ie borders, on certain elements I want to

For me the biggest take away from this thread is the distinction between release, deploy, and launch . So no matter how good or bad your CI/CD process is, you can still control what gets launched, when, and to whom. I did not know abo

It's very simple to use either, there are loads of example implementations on GitHub. I used one based on docker, and the bottleneck was actually sending the html, css you want to print (if it's not already served over http). I us

Since this is a side project, it depends on what you want to learn at the end of the day. You could invest in learning the tools that bigger teams are using, like kubernetes, or cloud-specific offerings, like AWS Fargate or whatever, but my

Search for TodoMVC, or something like that, where a todo list Web app is created using different tools and methodologies. Read the source code for each, and dig deeper for those frameworks that actually make sense to you.

Great idea, yet it boils down to `pg_dump`. Would it be possible to configure wal backups / replication just as easily (just add this config, run this container) ?

Great post with lots of details. I'm sure I'll try some of tools mentioned. We do something similar, multiple django sites and static sites on a single digital ocean droplet. We use docker for everything though, and have a single

An APM tool could help you find the real cause of the slowness instead of guessing. I used datadog recently to find the exact line of code that would bring CPU to 100%. Since it's quite pricey, I only used it for the couple of weeks I

Honestly, there's a million things you can learn by reading the source for those files. Right click, view source. Good skill to have. TO answer your question, these were written by hand and you can see that from the code.

Back then it was more about getting people to use CSS better (learn about it) and to use separate files (use classes not inline styles). Back then, pages were rendered on the server and in many cases there wasn't much templating either

If you have the time, learn a few tools and learn them well enough. Like django, bootstrap, git, and postgres. Maybe celery, redid or gunicorn. As for the front end, no matter how it seems, the fastest and easiest path forward for a newcome

I'd really like to see some performance benchmarks for this kind of libraries. We've been using weasyprint to generate pdfs from html but the performance was terrible: > 10 seconds for 5-6 pages and close to 100% CPU (on crappy

Definitely more complicated than a key value store, or sqlite, more like a distributed document database with (optional) map/reduce views (indeces) and more recently mongo-like indeces. Best use case though, for me, is key/value
