A long time ago, I asked my high school chemistry teacher why we use hydrochloric acid instead of hydrofluoric acid. Wouldn't the stronger electronegativity of fluorine react more efficiently? I'll never forget the answer she gave

I came here to see this. I used to hack scsh scripts in grad school, back when I was entirely too obsessed with functional languages. It's weird shell, but fun to use if you like that kind of thing.

Strongly concur. Patchelf is indispensible for beating sense into third-party closed-source shared objects. The `--set-soname` option is particularly useful in correcting all kinds of ineptitude.

It might be worth your time to try `xubuntu-desktop`. Like my sibling comment says, it's not pretty, but it is highly functional and avoids the Gnome-esque candy to which you allude.
