You want prison sentences for execs if you were charged $1.50 for a can of corn instead of $1.45? Surely you can't be serious.

Thanks, I appreciate your perspective. One note about asking for a refund/price adjustment. Occasionally the store workers forget to pull the sale prices off the shelf when the sale is over. In these situations, the manager/work

I have been to the Dollar Store (and similar) many times and have never witnessed anyone getting yelled at for saying, "Hey, I think this was a mistake. Can you correct it, please?" (or any other place I shop - especially the gro

"The people that would have the ability to push back"... And they can. Just bring it up to the cashier or managers attention, and voila, they adjust the price. Please let me know if you have had a different experience.

Yeah, queue the HN fake outrage about big companies and their C-Suite who are billionaires on the backs of the little people. So predictable. Fact is, Dollar General and similar stores provide a real value to people who live in rural areas

Sorry, real people who are on a real (strict) budget pay attention to the price of goods when they shop. If you are really hurting from a $3 overcharge, chances are you pay very close attention to the register receipt and bring it to the s

Yes, I have used iVentoy very much in the past as well. However, running a dozen (+12) simultaneous installs of Linux seems a stretch for 1G NICs. Using a small PC with a 2.5G NIC could probably do just as well as the 10G one - just sligh

I have never been to one of these "fests" but wouldn't be easier to just bring a small PXE server with an SSD and 10G NIC with an 8-port switch for net booting/install? Are the machines so old they can't boot off t

Sorry, carefully read the comments on this thread and you will quickly realize "real" coders are very much threatened by this technology - especially junior coders. They are frightened their job is at stake by a new tool and take

My suspicion is because they (HN) are very concerned this technology is pushing hard into their domain expertise and feel threatened (and, rightfully so).

In my naïve of opinion, AI is not necessarily about coding or making things better, it's more about creating a system to control the message to the masses. Just like Facebook controlled the message during the Clinton/Trump campai

Sure, but realistically, how often does this really happen? I have probably replaced 3 or 4 DIMMs over the past few years. Hardware is very reliable these days.

Not really. Have spare drives on the shelf and use the "remote-hands" feature from the CoLo provider. Just open a ticket to have the drive swapped. Pretty easy. For remote server connections just use IPMI/iKVM and iPXE.

I have done a ton of iPXE boot setups in the past. We use iPXE at our DC location for imaging, system recovery, etc. In fact, I just finished up a new boot image that creates a 100MB virtual floppy drive used for BIOS updates. Reach out

After lots of trial and error, we have everything running pretty well. We mainly use ZFS for the cost savings on virtual drives (compression=zstd). Previously, we were using XFS and the DB sizes were >5TB or more, and now we can use mu

Based on our testing, we get much better compression using ZFS than PGSQL. As a side benefit, we also get snapshots and the ability to easily find out how much compression our DBs are getting. According to a quick google search (to refresh

I am looking forward to testing this feature on our DBs running in Azure (on our own VMs - not hosted by Azure). We heavily use ZFS for compression (5:1 to 8:1) and tend to do lots of sequential scans. ZFS can hit about 150MB/sec on
