What was the reason behind the move to Google?

It happens, but with limited effect and restricted to certain jurisdictions. My point is that the social web is not owned or controlled by any one commercial entity, just like the rest of the web. The pirate bay is blocked by law in Norway

You can't (yet?) log in at other websites, but you can follow anyone from any fediverse service. I follow accounts from PixelFed and PeerTube on my own self-hosted version, which feels very web native and self evident when you get used

Nothing is censorship-free, but the social web (the fediverse) is just a bunch of websites. A website can be blocked at the DNS level, but that is exceedingly rare. Other websites may choose to block your site for their community. That is t

Not a fundamental right, but a fundamental part of many peoples lives, at least here in Norway. Do you have children in school? Part of a local club? And so forth. In many situations, there are no alternatives if you want to participate in

I did not stop bookmarking, I just radically simplified my routine. No (sub)folders, no system, just bookmark everything into one folder, lightly sprinkled with some tags from the top of my head. Since I never know what I will actually find

I find running 7B models on my 6 year old small form factor HP EliteDesk to be fast enough for casual everyday use. If this speedup can be applied generally to commonly used models, I can serve a local ChatGPT experience for both friends an

I'm using the extension Continue: https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/items?itemName=Continue... The setup of connecting to Ollama is a bit clunky, but once it's set up it works well!

Ollama does this. I run it in a container on my homelab (Proxmox on a HP EliteDesk SFF G2 800) and 7B models run decently fast on CPU-only. Ollama has a nice API and makes it easy to manage models. Together with ollama-webui, it can replace

I sometimes wonder if the use of Firefox is under reported just because a lot of it's users are power users, installing extensions that spoof the user agent. I know I did for a long while, making my Firefox pretend it was Chrome on a W

I've set up Ollama and this webgui on my proxmox homeserver (HP EliteDesk G3 800 SFF) and it is fast enough to run 7 and 13B models. I use it in vim and vscode too via the API. It feels great to do the inference locally on my own hardw

The differences between walled garden social media and the fediverse is significant. Not all users from the algorithmically driven varieties will find a new home in the fediverse, and I guess thats OK. I have been a part of the Fediverse si

Thats why I used Wordpress and Castopod as examples, as both offer subscription services in addition to self-hosting. The most important part is the option to use your own domain name, so an artist can take controll over its own brand and k

Price is not the only reason to not get a smartphone, not participating in surveilance captalism also plays a part for some. I have found a compromise with a de-googled phone, but I have considered switching to a dumb phone more than once.
