I have seen C++ programmers jump from HFT to image processing to video compression and then to embedded systems. They were completely different domains.

I think Fox Sports does something similar and people complained. I've gotten used to seeing cut-outs of people at ballgames now .. weird times that we live in!

Fantastic explanation of transforms and the example of 20 questions and DCT totally did it for me. The rest of the explanation is hard to grok if aren't a programmer or not interested in image & video compression. YMMV
