Come on, they wanted to give thousands of devs the chance to re-implement C apps in java. Poorly. Under the delusion that they can become ramen-profitable one day. OTOH, Angry Birds is awesome, so I suppose it wasn't a total waste.

Youth is simply one form of power that can be exercised to get publicity, guidance from older mentors, etc. There is nothing inherently wrong with that. Entrepreneurship and engineering are both about using what you have to build what you w

Dude, you don't have to move to SF. LA has a good startup scene and high-end engineering talent pool from Caltech/USC/UCLA, plus design/marketing/UX/etc people from the entertainment industry. There are no serious hurdles to founding a cons

GOOG and its partners seem to be focused on the US. AFAIK none of the EU carriers are spending anywhere near as much as VZ or Sprint on Android marketing.

a) Fair point. The justification is 'laziness'. The data is from 2010-10-05 04:00-05:00 GMT (late night PDT). 2). It uses a python script to save the twitter stream to json bz2 files, one per hour. And another script to analyze one bz2 to f

Debatable. For gold to drop, world govts either need to destroy currency, raise interest rates, or somehow make other asset classes more attractive. I guess the stock market is becoming more attractive, as mass layoffs have temporarily boos

Consider using duplicity to backup to gmail IMAPS. 7GB in a luxury, sea-side GOOG datacenter, free of charge forever. Need >7GB? Create another gmail acct. The problem with paid services is that if you have even a temporary credit card/

Making money in these app markets is not really a technical challenge, but a marketing/social challenge. It is definitely not easy to reach $1k/mo+ For whatever reason, most people are happy to drop $200 on the phone but are really cheap ab

OK, the goal is independent wealth: a low risk passive income. The math for this is pretty simple. Say you are a rock star making $100k/yr. After taxes, in CA, that's ~$60k/yr. If you are single and super-cheap (i.e. celibate), you can live

Nah, there are plenty of large tech companies that are run by sociopaths, with bad work/life balance, etc. At least at a startup, there is a small chance you'll get rich, or meet some productive people.

I call BS on this. Debtor democracies almost always end up rewarding debtors and screwing savers (through inflation, government bailouts, etc). Why fight the system? Get the largest fixed rate mortgage you can, at the lowest possible rate,

The point of debt is that when the real estate market drops, you declare bankrupcy and let the lender eat most of the loss. Donald Trump has done this like 5 times. If you own outright, you eat the entire loss yourself. Basically -- debt in
