As a solo founder myself, yes. If you ask for a feature, they tend to actually go out of their way to help, instead of having it rot on the backlog for a decade.

Yeah that's pretty wild. I managed to fit my entire serverless stack (roughly 1.2m checks per week) into 2x 256MB VMs and 1x 512MB VM, you could run a monster server on that.

As someone that runs an uptime monitoring service business - you run several replicas of your stack (necessary to stay up during huge outages anyway), and monitor yourself. Monitoring from another vendor helps too.

I built my own version entirely within AWS Lambda's free tier, works well until you're into "continuously running serverless" territory - at that point any random VM would be significantly cheaper.

Just wanted to share this article as I think the advent of easy/cheap firecracker VMs is going to change how folks test new ideas on the Internet.

Self healing VMs - look into fly.io, they just restart when out of memory etc took about a day to rewrite and a week of 30 mins per day to figure out how to optimise my code for self healing. knowing my bill is capped by number of VMs * mem

Definitely - with startups offering 3x free firecracker VMs (of 256MB RAM) these days, there's almost no reason to start ideas with serverless.

I run 1.2 million uptime checks per week, my total AWS bill was $150/mo before I migrated to permanently running VMs - it's definitely doable without trying too hard.

I've spent the last four years now trying to start a business on the Internet (working on ideas roughly two hours per day before work). Each project had valuable lessons (both business and code/architecture) that carried over into

Write a new technical article each week on your blog. Get feedback (by sharing them). You'll improve over time.

They're using a 3rd party status page, it's a fancy CMS at best.

Yeah I'm starting to realise this myself having moved from Australia to France myself. Big plusses but life kinda goes on without you back home, and you kinda miss it.

Watch your memory pressure in Activity Monitor. Mine's typically orange/green during web dev and works fine, but if I open too many electron apps it'll go red and the laptop grinds to a halt.

I wake up an hour earlier and code/handle my side-projects in the two hours before work. In the last year and a half it's allowed me to build a whole SaaS (and business around it), a couple of books, and dozens of blog posts.

For web dev the base model (8GB RAM) MacBook Air M1 is a viable dev machine - makes the maxed out i7 MacBook Pro I had from work feel sluggish in comparison.
