If you read the article, in the third or so paragraph. > What this means, performance-wise, is that measuring requests per second gets a lot more attention than connections per second. Usually, the latter can be one or two orders of magn

This happens all the time. It happened to my dad, who was healthy and exercised regularly. After a bike ride he collapsed and died. Often there are warnings, like arythmias which I guess can be signs the electrical functions aren't gre

I don't think it's going to happen, due to the stack+heap per process and lack of shared memory (ok yea ETS sure) which you need for fault tolerance, necessarily requiring more copying than conventional languages. I think there

Definitely. In the handful of instances I've seen akka used, regular jvm abstractions would have been simpler and more coherent.

Counterpoint: debugging erlang systems in production is a cakewalk. The tracing and introspection tools that come bundled in OTP make tracking problems down really easy. It's really hard to go back to systems that don't have erl

Right, but you can also get that same 5x increase from writing something using a higher level language running on the JVM or BEAM. You don't need to go full on "systems programming" to have something that outperforms Ruby.

It's a meme that American transit sucks. But some is very good. Seattle's light rail has been great even though it doesn't go everywhere yet. You might be surprised.

This article isn't great, it provides weak evidence for the first point and speculates on the final two points based on personal experience. The fact that this article is garbage doesn't mean it's wrong, though. I'm very

The point is to show boot times. If you are scaling up/down in response to load, this is a nice quality to have. Most folks have really spiky traffic patterns so this can save you a lot of money. Obviously no one would ever run somethi

Can anyone comment on the rationale behind having 27 engines? IIRC this was a fundamental reason why the Soviet N1 was so consistently unreliable. It seems like probability is kind of a pain in the ass here, no?

Would you say the OCaml-port-as-an-optimization-strategy only makes sense if the program is compute bound, though? The reason I ask is because we're running a Erlang+JInterface program and the performance advantage the JVM has over BEA

Mnesia is a joy to use, but keep mind it was written before the CAP theorem existed, so it doesn't behave that well in the face of network partitions.

This was a great article on this sort of thing http://cloudless.studio/articles/12-elixir-vs-ruby-file-i-o-... Tl;dr: Elixir is a bit faster than Ruby for straight up File IO if you really know what you're doing.

The impedance mismatch between Erlang/elixir is much smaller than that between Java/scala. All data types are the same, functional idioms and conventions are the same, exception handling and propagation is the same. None of that i

If you're a US citizen then you file taxes and pay them on income over ~100k, regardless of your physical location or company's HQ. The US is one of the only countries that requires expats to pay taxes.
