Another +1 for SizeUp, since I bought a display for my MacBook I love it. I also like if for "name your price".

I was referring to the fact that they use it at Google as a Git server, not the speed of Java. LE: I am a Ruby developer and know what "fast enough" is. Also I know that Java/JVM is quite fast, JRuby is sometimes faster than Ruby 1.9.

I know about disabling it, but I would like to still be enabled when I'm not in privacy mode. I have complete confidence in your privacy, that is why I said I will opt-in if you would like to gather data to improve your product.

I got started with Chef today and it's great. It's organized into recipes, and you can share cookbooks (see the official one, it has plenty of recipes for common things). I also like using erb templates for config files.

Compared to the cost of building and maintaining your own system I think it is cheaper. Add the cost of servers, colocation, bandwidth, people. Also, on S3 you pay exactly for what you use, if you use your own server you are paying for them

Using Amazon S3 you have the advantage of using a tested and scalable system, easy to implement and use and it's not expensive.

Instead of using normal hashing you can use consistent hashing so you don't need to move that many users. Here's a post explaining it: http://www.spiteful.com/2008/03/17/programmers-toolbox-part-...
