The ROI on rewriting existing code may be questionable, but the long-term ROI on writing new projects in safe languages seems unassailable. Choosing C or C++ for new infrastructure projects is madness at this point.

It would be great if you could fix politics by breaking up a few villainous corporations but it's much more difficult than that. In America, Michael Bloomberg and Donald Trump have (in different ways) shown us the limits of the power o

> 1/3rd of all emissions are produced by 20 companies Sure, but mostly they're producing goods and services that millions/billions of people consume. Getting rid of those 20 companies won't change anything.

Blaming "society" is a nothingburger. It doesn't point towards any solution. Ditto "capitalism" (although the OP doesn't go there) --- people pursue desires and respond to incentives; you can call those effects

Brave's long-term problem is that Google can set the cost of Brave's ongoing maintenance to whatever they want. In the 90s Microsoft called this "keeping the competition on a treadmill".

Mozilla's Persona project solved federated ID for the Web pretty well, a decade ago. The problem is that a lot of the big tech companies want to completely own their relationships with their users. Google is never going to let you log

It's a good observation that checking for 32-bit overflow is not too bad, but... > In 64 bit ... almost all integers remain 32 bit. I don't believe this is true for Rust, even if we exclude index integers in iterators because w

Also Rust applications are increasingly going to be built with integer overflow checking enabled, e.g. Android's Rust components are going to ship with integer overflow checking. And unlike say GMP, that poses a potential code density

Indeed, I agree that one of our most important responsibilities as humans (arguably the most important if you take a generous interpretation) is "to not abuse our mental and technological advantages" --- to each other as well as

I agree with you, that meme is highly misleading. To some extent company behavior is just aggregate customer behavior. However, it's not the whole extent. For example Exxon knowing about the CO2 greenhouse effect in 1982 and keeping qu

No, not at all. I'm a Christian and it's dogma for me that all humans carry the image of God and have intrinsic worth independent of their abilities or utility.

Perhaps "duties" is a clearer word here. It is not the duty of plants to photosynthesize. It's just something they do. It is important to distinguish these two concepts, because if you equate them, then for example it is the
