No. Copyright is about making a copy. It’s literally in the name: right to copy. A file downloaded illegally means someone made a copy without being authorized by the IP holder. What you do with the copy is irrelevant.

Not necessarily. Facebook just needs to have associated the email you know with their profile somehow. They can do this silently, thanks to their tracking. There was a thread about it on HN a few weeks ago ok another facebook story.

Xi has multiple components written in multiple languages. In the rust core, json de/serialization is not a problem, but swift is lacking a similar high-performance library.

Scalatron[0] is a fun one. There's also screeps[1] available on steam. Screeps is probably my favorite because it supports webassembly. So you can use any language with it, like Rust, C++, etc... [0]: https://scalatron.githu

There's another way to intercept syscalls without going as far as a kernel module, using debugging API ptrace. There's a pretty neat article about how to implement custom syscalls using ptrace: https://nullprogram.com&#

Some of us with mac pros or hackintosh literally can't update to mojave, because of missing nvidia drivers. And high sierra was such a clusterfuck that I'm glad I missed out on it.

Awesome, maybe now all those news website blocking European IPs will instead fix their stupid tracking. I can't wait to see how many dark patterns they will use to force the user to "consent".

It's not that complicated. -ffunction-sections -fdata-sections arguments to gcc coupled with --gc-sections argument to the linker will get rid of most of the fat.

Kcalc doesn’t use the whole qt library, the whole X library, the whole kDE library, or the whole C library. When you statically link, only the functions that are actually called are included. This can trim a lot of space.

Can you expand on which CPU exactly you are talking to? I'm genuinely curious. From what I've seen, every major high-end CPU architecture is affected, because they all rely on speculation. Of course, some low-end CPUs (such as ARM

OS research is still active though. I see many interesting microkernels being developed left right and center. RedoxOS is trying to build a unix microkernel. Nintendo built Horizon, a capabilities-based microkernel for the Nintendo Switch.

That's the point. The idea of having a "defensive patent" is to avoid having trolls patenting the same thing and then going after small companies with no means to defend themselves in a patent suit. For instance: https:/

0-based indexing is closer to the memory representation, but 1-based indexing is closer to how we actually think about arrays. We say the first element, not the zeroth element. Nothing wrong with 1-based indexing except old habits die hard.

You can, actually. At least in x86 asm, you just have to add an int3 instruction to get a breakpoint (requires OS support of course).

Encryption is not considered ammo since forever now. And slack doesn't have E2E encryption, and is an american company. The NSA can just knock on the front door and ask for the data, same as they would for an ISP.

An NSL cannot force you to lie. You can say "no comment", and that's how it's always been handled. Why would they vehemently deny an NSL (with all the risks involved) when "no comment" would suffice ?
