Hilarious and ridiculous. Google could legitimately afford to pull out of all business in Italy, close all offices and reject traffic from IP addresses originating in Italy. It'd be interesting to see that as a precedent.

News from Helsinki was they paid "substantially lower" than that listed price. I suspect $8-$10M was the actual price based on anecdotes floating around now in Europe. Not bad for the original angels, since they at least got a few times th

It's disappointing that Google isn't more prominent on that list given their dependence on open source in so many places and having acquired such deep talent over the years.

These bundles of keywords are generally pretty imprecise and likely based on some of the AdSense lexicon clusters. Undoubtedly a few erroneous words, timed with something like a Coke promo or book launch or whatever would cause this kind o

Nice work Jeff. The UI is really clean and the option to not register is useful.

It makes me sad that Yelp won't innovate in their core product. The site UI is virtually unchanged in 3+ years. I'd love to see them un-bury the histogram of ratings, and add granularity such that a tween complaining about the waiter's sh

This is a pretty helpful document to help folks understand what's really common. Unfortunately, while it's nice to see a 1x liquidation preference, when multiple rounds happen these often turn nasty as each investor starts to look out for

The rules in the US seem to have changed this summer to require ID in almost every case. See Flyertalk's security forum here: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/travel-safety-security/984568... Very disappointing and arguably unconstitution

They're just trying to raise awareness of the Conversion Optimiser tool. Surprisingly, there are quite a few small to medium sized advertisers who don't know about it even though they are perfect fits for the product. In general, due to qu

Google already had written this off as a defensive cost to be sure. There's never been a surprise about this deal not being, prima facie, a good equity investment. However since it's been publicly traded, losing three points of market sha

Paul Carr just enjoys writing controversial headlines to stir up the pot. I think his statements are just as valid for many Web 2.0 businesses frankly, around the world, not just London. Things that aren't successful will naturally die.

Yes, this is a bit curious. GFS cells are generally restricted to particular eng groups depending on the need, so I assume this particular GFS cell was fairly restricted, but it's still somewhat worrisome that unrelated, non-production cod

IIRC, this was a rather high-compute-cost project inside of Google, far more so than other search projects. Obviously it was a favorite though of the eng decision makers, so was well cared for resource-wise.

I find this to be the case more and more. For very specific queries, Google has gotten to be rather annoying with overly aggressive term expansion and ignorance of particularly uncommon words. Bing actually pleased me this week due to the

You've done a good job building ranking but frankly the site is primarly just a hook into their data and they can do as they please with it. In essence, you're value is selling the SEO and traffic, which they would have arguably have built
