Most (80%, nobody knows how many) "sperm donor kids" don't know they were conceived that way. It's often a family secret and many parents were advised by doctors never to tell.

There is a significant time value of money effect at play here - better to get the tax advantages from writing the investment off in Year 5 than getting paid back in Year 12

Likely not - venture capital investments have at least 1x liquidation preferences. The founders likely got nothing.

Nothing - we started the company in 2014 and began using Slack. Were much closer to ~$200/year when we started.

Well, just like there are objective levels of depreciation for certain classes of assets (property vs. equipment), perhaps there could be similar levels of depreciation allowable for sales & marketing costs based on historic customer ch

Well, I think it relates to historical churn though - B2C churn in general is significantly higher than B2B (see Blue Apron). The switching costs on detergent brands are essentially 0. For us to switch from Slack now would be a fairly maj

I think a lot of it is historically tied to taxation. By not depreciating sales and marketing, Slack can claim all of that expense upfront, and delay tax payments since they show a greater loss.

I think historical accounting practices and standards are not great at evaluating SaaS businesses. We came up with the concept of depreciation/amortization as a way to better match up expenses with revenues in a given time frame. I thi

Also, I did ask for feedback on your suggestion from the community - would be happy to share that with you (even an anonymous email address or something). Hearing from actual adults that could be similar to your hypothetical sperm-progeny

We can probably do this forever :) It's clear you've done a lot of secondary research. I am, too, very familiar with the situation in Canada and have done a lot of advocacy work here. I would suggest that the standards are not q

Claiming that people donate anonymously because they are concerned about claims to their estate is, IMO, pretty ridiculous. There have been millions of sperm donations done through fertility clinics and not one documented case of any offsp

They're more related than it might immediately appear - purposefully choosing an anonymous donor over an open ID donor is often correlated with shame and secrecy around infertility, whereas choosing an open ID donor signifies acceptanc

The very first "type" of parent listed in the Wikipedia article you're citing are biological parents.

Thank goodness for that. People who donate sperm but are unwilling to have any contact with the human beings they create should not be donating sperm.

Article 7 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of a Child asserts that everyone has a right to know their genetic origin. Intentionally depriving someone of that right through anonymous donation is unethical. On a broader level, I

That's my point - providing the biological material and nothing more is inherently unethical. I would encourage you to look at some of the research - 70%+ of "anonymous" sperm donors are actually open to contact with their ge

Anonymity created many, many risks. There are documented cases of genetic half-siblings having a sexual relationship because they did not know they were donor conceived. There are documented cases of suicides from adults finding out they we
