What is obvious today might not have been obvious in 1996. Our experiences and training has changed dramatically over the past 26 years.

I find people’s reactions to microservices to be fascinating. I have always looked at them with the same framing as Unix userland tools - many small, focused apps that do something really well, coupled with a super generic IPC mechanism - i

So, about that. One of the weird things about General Relativity is that if we COULD travel at or near the speed of light, then time dilation and length contraction will conspire to enable a trio to the end of the observable universe in 30

I _really_ like this variant! In my experience new grads never seemed to have too much trouble with the exercise but then I do explain that it’s diagnostic in nature and use the exercise to see how coachable they are.

I have had good luck hiring developers by asking them to do a code review of something WE wrote (but framed as if a junior developer wrote it) This helps us look for good signal around their communication skills, mentoring skills, empathy,

I would love to have one of these eInk displays in my woodworking shop for displaying project plans while I work! I hope this product becomes commoditized soon!

Saying “ This is the worst way to learn how to draw.” feels, to me at least, like a microinvalidation. If that’s not your intent then I’m happy to move past it. That exercise I outlined was the first project that gave me the confidence I ne

Suit yourself. The method I described worked for me. I was terrible at drawing before, and I was awesome at it after. If it helps the OP great, if not, maybe your way would work. I’m a bit surprised at the perceived hostility here. When it

To learn to draw, you first need to learn to see. So copy things. Try this project: Take a sheet of paper and divide the space into 2 equal halves. In one half make a collage of black and white images. No color - this is important. Try to f

I saw a video recently where Adam Savage was talking about his experience working at ILM. His friends observed at the time he always spoke in terms of what he “gets to do”. Not has to do, _gets_ to do. That looks like a pretty great metric

I’m glad you had a better experience than I. I tried learning CL back in 2006 and read a quickstart guide from the #lisp IRC channel. It had sentences in it like: “ Using a plain text editor without any runtime connection to your Lisp imple

I remember wanting to learn lisp. I got stuck and reached out to the community for help. And found them to be very hostile. I decided I had better things to do with my time.

You have all the skills needed to succeed in a technical level. Maybe look into expanding your expertise in sales, marketing, or running a business. If that doesn’t float your boat then I suggest getting into woodworking with hand tools. My

Back in the mid 90's there were 2 rabbit holes I loved to visit. One of them was the Monty Python website :-) The other one I haven't been able to track down. I'm hoping someone here can tell me what happened to it. It was an

I'm not an optometrist but I imagine your lenses are working against you so you need to compensate extra. Also: your eyeball shape is working against you. Not all focusing happens in the lens. The eyeball fluid does malt of the work ac

I had to have my lenses removed from both eyes when I was a child (in the 70s). The problem in my case was that they were dislocated. Since the surgery, I wore very thick glasses to correct it. I switched to contacts in the early 80s (conta
