I think 4½ billion euro is enough for Google sit up. This isn't a "pay and forget fine". If they don't change in 90 days, they are fined 5% of their revenue every day. That's a lot.

Small fines don't work. Large fines get attention.

Is that a big problem for you? The OSM operations working group is run by volunteers, on semi-donated hardware. They don't offer SLAs, they don't offer uptime guarantees. If you create an app that's (say) responsible for a 20

The OSM website includes tile servers which render the tiles that are on https://www.openstreetmap.org

There are OSM tileservers.. that's what you see when you go to https://www.openstreetmap.org . You are encouraged to host your own tiles if needed.

Overpass turbo is a great tool, but it's not in the same category as a geocoder like nominatim. Overpass is for querying OSM objects, not parsing addresses.

If OSMnx splits each way into sequences of "node N to node N+1", then the results are based on the number of node-node connections, not the number of ways.

The EU's new data privacy law (GDPR) allows you to withdraw consent, and "it must be as easy to withdraw consent as to give it". A perfectly clear and powerful way to describe what is wanted. "It must be as easy to cance

Turning OSM into, essentially a view of local governments would remove the wiki aspect, where anyone can edit it. Additionally, there is enough problems getting the global OSM community to come up with one tagging scheme. If every country m

There are numerous "open data" licences, many of which are totally incompatible with OSM. CC-BY 4.0 in this case isn't straightforwardly importable into OSM (you need to get them to sign a waiver). So that's one reason t

Yes they could. The OSM licence requires a share-alike, so OSM would be able to use anything Apple add, but all that's required is a database dump. It would be up to the OSM community to "merge" it back in if they wanted.

With code you need to be able to programme. For OSM you just need to know something about an area. Do you know what the name of that street is? That there's an italian restaurant on that corner? What the house number of that building i

I think the USA has (a) much more homeless people and (b) much less buses than random places in the UK. (I remember reading a stat from ~5 or 10 years ago that San Francisco had more homeless people than England).

Microsoft has allowed the OSM community to trace from Bing aerial imagery for almost 10 years now. That's been a massive benefit to OSM, way more than this dump of buildings. They should be congratulated and thanked for that contributi

One of the example Rails applications they use is the code which powers the OpenStreetMap website. They populated their install by randomly filling in fields on the website. Which doesn't include any map editing! For OSM they suggest c

You could do business with places in the EU, where you are covered by EU's stronger data protection law. If an EU based company do stuff with the personal data of US citizens in the US, then the GDPR (etc) applies to that EU company.
