Even hunter-gatherers have HUGE impact on the environment. They often set fires to clear underbrush in forests (making hunting easier) or wildfires in grasslands to drive herds of animals (again for hunting). They move around and introduc

Regarding performance, I can only say that julia's primary use case doesn't really seem to be for small scripts that take a few msec to run. The last set of programs I wrote in julia had run times of hours to days. A few extra se

You want exposed plumbing and wiring. That makes them easily accessible, easier to see what's broken and easier to fix. This is why military ships do not hide plumbing and wiring behind wall panels.

Regarding the "huge following"... Yes, lots of people read it, send links to friends, etc. But, most of the time those links are sent for comedy or shock value, not because people think it's serious news. To use an analo

30 years ago, when I started working as a professional software developer, I encountered people in their 40's who had been professional software developers for 20 years. So no, software development is NOT young. FORTRAN was released

Yes, among other locations (Hong Kong, Canton, Amoy, Shanghai, etc.). I was describing the various "treaty ports" that were established following the Opium Wars, which were essentially a series of wars fought by the west to allow

Um, that is essentially what happened about 100 years ago. A few differences though... The europeans brought along lots of armed guards and demanded China's laws didn't apply to them. Obviously, there was some friction.

Banks making mortgages did not pay for appraisals, sellers did. So prosecute the appraisers and sellers. Banks did not falsify borrower income, borrowers did. So prosecute the borrowers. Why blame banks for other people's lies? Or d

What the author fails to understand is that IoT is not a consumer thing, it's an industrial thing. And silicon valley has (mostly) missed the boat. They're behind the curve. There are already 100's of millions, if not billi

I used to think this 20 years go. I was also wrong. The state of the art of software development does NOT move fast, it moves glacially slowly. The fundamental technologies of 20 years ago are very similar to what is in use today. The

What economic benefits? Seriously, I don't see any. I mean, I see some for the producers of said cars, but not for a city that mandates only self-driving taxis.

Say $3mil in net income means a company doing between $20mil to $40mil in revenues. Which typically means between 100 to 200 employees. This is not "stay small".

Yes, remember Sun. Once a strong company, now a shadow of its former self and a "brand" in Oracle's portfolio. I'm sure giving yet more things away would have saved them (that was sarcasm).

Have you tried adjusting it for inflation and GDP growth? Even after that, the S&P 500 should be doing better. Why? Because the S&P500 represents the winners not the overall economy.

Jeez, you're talking about something designed and built in 1982-1983 (over 30 years ago) and meant to run on something with 128KB of RAM with no hard drive and a 400KB floppy disk. You try fitting all that plus a GUI those constraints.

Perhaps, but it's not like you have to pay 2x or 3x more to hire a programmer in their 50's. More like 20% or 30% more. For 200% to 300% more experience. That's a deal, in my book.
