No, I have been meaning to, but the drives spin down when idle and it is a Haswell CPU which has decent power saving features as well so It will be nowhere near $30/month.

If the controllers were the same type I would agree, but that seems to never be the case with these.

Ah oops, misread the ASROCK specs and that board does support ECC ram so in that sense it is ok. And the low power consumption of the Atom chip would work well. I still don't like the price though.

That board actually splits the SATA ports across 3 controllers and they are not all 6Gbps. It also costs nearly $400 and doesn't support ECC ram. If you are going to build a ZFS-based NAS you really should be using error correcting ram

It is also hard to find a motherboard with 8 SATA ports. They are out there, but you end up getting them split across different types of controllers which makes things complicated. And since you can pick up an M1015 for around $100 and flas

I just built one recently. Motherboard-wise you should get one that supports ECC ram. Other than that it doesn't matter that much. You typically don't use the onboard SATA ports either, so the motherboard specs aren't very im

He kind of lost me on his opening CGI argument. Most PaaS I am familiar with don't run PHP through CGI at all. Either Apache mod_php or nginx php-fpm. I guess the author means a CGI-like model or something?

Seems they are just trying to match EC2 here, not beat them. http://aws.amazon.com/ec2-sla/ says 99.95% as well.

If you are looking for the best, regardless of price, it is probably the ASUS RT-AC68U that was released recently. See the 9-page dd-wrt thread on it here: http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=177612&sid=8bf

Good idea. Explosively eject a massive burning battery pack into the path of the unsuspecting traditional combustible car behind you and watch it burn in your rear-view mirror as you coast away on the backup emergency battery...

It doesn't really matter what the numbers say. If you have spent any time at all in Waterloo I don't think you would argue that it wasn't a sleepy little Canadian town. And there is nothing wrong with being a sleepy little Ca

There are a number of reasons. Most states have laws regarding how temporary rental properties (otherwise known as hotels) are zoned. You can't suddenly turn a building zoned for residential use into a hotel without getting it re-zoned

If enough people do this it will be the end of Airbnb. This is one of the patterns the state of NY is using against Airbnb while Airbnb is arguing that the service is intended for people occasionally renting out their primary residence. If

I did my 5 years at Waterloo (Systems Design Eng) and I wouldn't disagree with the description of Waterloo being sleepy. Especially these days with Blackberry turning many of the areas near the campus into ghost towns.

I still don't really understand what people think Yahoo should have done in this case when local authorities go through proper local legal channels to obtain information. It happens all the time in the US, and as we have seen recently,

Yup, people often miss that PHP is modal and that the default mode is simply to output. So if you put Hello World in a file it actually compiles to these opcodes: ECHO 'Hello+World%0A' RETURN 1 Which is identical to the

Not much money to be made on speaking. You are lucky to get your expenses covered. But sure, better consulting/job gigs could be an outcome from writing an O'Reilly book. Of course, if you took the year or more it took you to write that boo

Jerry, of course it is unfair. But life is rarely fair. This is more about barriers than fairness. Being a woman in a male-dominated field is rough. There are a lot of barriers to overcome along the way. This grant is simply removing one ba

Something doesn't look quite right about this Yahoo hack. Yahoo doesn't store MySQL passwords in PHP source code like that. Maybe he pulled these out of something else and wrote that file himself as an odd way to show he got the passwords?

You need to understand that English is not the first language for many developers, so taking snippets like that literally really isn't fair. It isn't a "won't fix" because fixing it is hard, the "hard problem" refers to it being a bit hard
