By what metric freelancing never worked? As long as someone needs something done that they cannot or don't want to do themselves it is quite simple to get paid for doing the work for them. Self-employed artisans and professionals exist

If you need them for IPC within same host then POSIX queues (see https://pubs.opengroup.org/onlinepubs/7908799/xsh/mqueue.h.h... ) are a thing. Redis can be used as simple message queue as well.
