What if the energy comes from solar? Then the energy consumption does not matter that much. Also, even a tesla is not 2500kg and many people with family rarely drive with a single occupant. Also, have you looked at the energy consumption of

Not sure if the boring company approach is a bad solution. For 30 years, I have heard from environmentalists that electric cars will need to have short range and shitty performance, but we have to outlaw ICE cars anyway for the greater good

Why have technical innovation at all, let's just outlaw stuff... I really don't get this desire to outlaw cars. I like walkable cities, but I also like the comfort and privacy of car transport. I live in a place (Germany) with goo

There is a version of libp2p written in rust, developed by parity.io: https://github.com/libp2p/rust-libp2p . IPFS is much younger than bittorrent, so it is not surprising that there are not as many implementations. I

This is not really the same. Malta seems to use a heat pump to produce reservoirs of both hot and cold material. This allows to produce electricity via a carnot process with very high efficiency (theoretically 100% because while the carnot

Not sure what exactly you are looking for, but I find IPFS / libp2p pretty easy to use once you know the basic concepts. For a simple web based GUI app you can use the js version of IPFS or interact with a locally running go-IPFS node

For the export at GSOC we had a streaming REST interface based on akka-streams. It is used to get the data into other systems based on spark for more complex analysis. Of course you also lose the compression, but the target system is typica

Sure, I looked at parquet and HDF5. The compression is much better with iptm for the kind of data I am interested in, and the algorithm is also much simpler. It's less than 500 LOC in total. The reason I wrote this in typescript is tha

0.4.15 currently. There are some things that are not production ready (in particular IPNS), but the basic infrastructure (the distributed content-addressed storage) is pretty solid. Discovery also works pretty well. NAT hole punching is imp

We were storing telemetry that was preprocessed by the MCS. This is preferable for analysis, since you can not afford to pipe the CCSDS packets through the rather slow mission control systems every time you want to plot or analyse the data.

Yes, zstd is definitely on the todo list. The increased performance should be quite welcome on low power edge devices. I tried to get it to work, but had some trouble with the existing javascript bindings. I have only recently started devel

We are using sqlite for some things. But for large quantities of simply structured telemetry data it is not very good. About as good as raw json. The reason it is not very efficient is that the disk layout is optimised for fast access.

I am using ipfs at work for something unrelated to filecoin. From our experience in the last months, the speed of ipfs development and the responsiveness of the developers has picked up markedly since the filecoin ICO. Since filecoin is goi

I don't get all the hatred for ICOs. Nobody is forcing anybody to invest in them, and for something like filecoin there is at least a chance of something extremely useful coming out of it. Many other ICOs seem pretty strange to me, but

If your app is hosted on github, it is not really distributed. And Ethereum is extremely limited as a database.
