campnic, I appreciate the response. I'll try and address each thing you mentioned. -------------------- but let me tell you what i see. 'Amazon is building their market on the backs of apps by giving them away for free.' -------------------

shifty, Admittedly, my response was focused more on the other beef than that single point. Given how much other information was in the post, I didn't think the 20% == 0% was the central argument; my apologies for missing that. My core bel

Ahhh! Eric that is exactly where I got that info from, I couldn't place it, but I finished reading "Drive" a few months ago so that must be where it came from.

There are some excellent studies out there that suggest this to be false. One source[1] showed that: - For highly creative jobs, respect and autonomy to function and just enough $ to cover comfortable living expenses produced the best resul

I don't think it is a fair thing to ask for, but it is certainly a fair thing for you to look for. It is the job of the company to impart passion, set an example and hold on to the people that get behind the company vision. Without that

Exactly right. It just depends on where you stop in the hypothetical timeline of thought. If you stop in 2020, then yes, we have a ton of human engineers working on this problem. If you think out 2030, now more of it is handled by machines

Good point, I wonder if we will need to create virtual realities for ourselves just to stay "occupied" ... here is a meta though... what if that is what we live in NOW, hence all the talk about "is our reality a hologram?" recently. Incepti

hackin, I've been reading your replies and thought this summed up what you've been saying in other replies. Exactly spot on that the framework for society we have no is not capable of handling/supporting what I'll call the artistic/spiritua

Good point, but does it have a conclusion? I think Kurzweil refers to it as the Singularity... but basically what happens when AI reaches the point where it can manage itself or advance itself? This is certainly in the realm of "what if" be

I very much agree that this point will eventually be reached. We won't suddenly stop automating tasks and making those automations more and more functional. It'll be interesting. I've spoken to people that feel our role will be to move back

+1 Effective Java is a must-read once you understand Java. It points out what is magic and what is not. What takes up processing time and what doesn't. It pulls the sheet back on the abstractions and shows you how everything works and what

I find thought-topics like this fascinating. - What, if anything, would change if we confirmed this? e.g. I still have a mortgage, I still want my kids in school, etc. - We manifested ourselves into a dream world, forgot we did it, and

Ed, you put it exactly right. Airbnb's "wrap this up, get rid of it" response is what I would categorize as a typical, immature response to a problem. Make it go away, I don't want to look at it. A responsible, empathetic response would be

What replaced VM? I've seen antirez saying recently that diskstore isn't necessarily the perfect replacement it was suppose to be either. Just a big confused about what the best-practice is moving forward for bigger-than-memory data sets.
