Certifications are nice, but that does not necessarily make people a good IT security specialist. There is no clear path, but there are many facets to learn about: * Web application security and popular attacks (such as https://w

The best insight here is that self-worth and fear of shaming are the main motivators for not agreeing. A weaker argument, that is less threatening to self-worth is one way of preventing that your discussion partner goes on the defense. Anot

For software developers, I feel this career thing works a bit differently. Going up the ladder means managing people or projects, but that is not necessarily more fun than writing code. I don't know where I see myself in 5 years, but i

This is only true for local hidden variables. It is possible to explain this with hidden variables in broader sense. Which you could also call hidden connections.

This is way over-engineered. Just put your hands in cold water.. Also, this fact about cooling the body for better performance is well known in professional sports. An example product that is being used there: http://www.icydip.com

This discussion about the value and use of bike lanes keeps amazing me. It seems many people hold a negative view without having good arguments, almost religiously. Living in the Netherlands, the benefits of separate bike lanes (to point of

What the article misses, but what I think is going on is that education is a lot like health care: The need is very high (everybody wants to get a good job!), while supply is limited to established institutions. Partly because it's so hard

Instead of a Like button, I would much more prefer a link back to the comments section. That is more in line with my use of Hackers News; read article => read comments.

I find the remark about not funding such elementary research silly. It could be said that not finding the Higgs particle is a bigger discovery than actually finding it. Either way, it's about gaining knowledge.

Yes, I agree. I guess the problem lies in mentioning The Pirate Bay in the first place. The facilitator is unimportant. It's like saying that the documents were mailed via TNT.

It is save to say that in no point in time have so many people worked so little while being so rich. That contradicts that automation creates as many jobs as it destroys. We are not talking about a 'point' where the 40 hour week stops. It i

Herd mentality is the result of domain knowledge. All programmers experience problems with ToDo lists.. How many programmers experience retail analytic problems? There are many, many more of these niches. If you want to find a good market s

I disagree, the number is there to indicate a version, nothing more. The version number in Chrome is not exposed to users in a marketing way. Google simple decided to go for big version numbers, because what does switching from 2.95 to 3.0

I didn't know there was such a thing as a [language]-programmer. Picking up a new language has to be nigh trivial for any programmer, right? Getting to know the frameworks and libraries intricately takes time, but if you're not able to writ

Exactly, a year ago I was looking for a small portable laptop and definitely wanted a Thinkpad. I could choose the X300, X200s or an old, second-hand X61s with 4:3 screen ratio. Then I saw this image: http://www.notebookreview.com/assets/

Yes, from the perspective of imperfect information you could (maybe even should) view the development of a feature as research for the question: "Can it be done and for how much?". This way the sunk costs are just research costs, which make
