They should call it “backend workers” instead. Backend “subscribers” (think ”workers” please) don't use PUB/SUB because then the same message will be delivered to every worker. You hardly want that behavior to process web requests. PUSH s

This is great news, but does anyone have any idea how to get IPv4-over-IPv6 tunnels to work? I'm in an all-IPv6 network, but unless all websites automatically work flawlessly after Jun 6, 2012, I still need to access IPv4 resources. I have

I was using the one-message-per-file approach, but keeping millions of small files in a filesystem is quite a challenge: I have to worry about available inodes, and listing/manipulating these files takes minutes!

A side question: what's the best way to build an email message store which stores millions of messages (and adding tens of thousands on average each day) on disk so that it can support: 1) Fast looking up messages sent/received by a particu

Actually I've tried Calepin before creating my own solution. Calepin is 99% of what I need, but the last 1%, that Calepin requires me to click the "Publish" on their site every time, drives me nuts. I just want to save the Markdown file and

The thinking might be along the line: if you need to use Hadoop at all, you are probably already using Java anyway to maximize single machine performance.

Perhaps it is also influenced by Python? Come on, not everyone on Earth loves Ruby's syntax. I was turned off by the endless 'end's.

No, not just Europeans. Canadians will have to pay the same price for the device and power adapter, plus $14 import duties. I thought NAFTA should eliminate the difference, but it turned out not to be the case. Other good things for geeks

Compiling speed is slightly improved in Scala 2.9. Using sbt will reduce the time too. It's not as fast as Go, though.

Windows actually have great Chinese translations. They are not official, and some of them are really stupid (but funny!), e.g.: Windows 3.2 -> Win32 -> 瘟32 Windows 95 -> Win95 -> 瘟95 Windows XP -> XP -> 叉屁 Windows 7

FYI, Subway (赛百味, Sai Bai Wei) would mean "better than other 100 flavors" in Chinese, which isn't true at all: for most Chinese, subways are not that tasty. But the name is great!

How much RAM does a web server need waiting for socket I/O? Not a lot. For most typical web apps, an instance of web frontend consumes a small fraction of the system's total memory. You could fit a surprisingly lot of such instances into a

The single most import reason that I like GAE is that it used to charge based on CPU usage, so that I could carefully optimize my web apps to reduce costs. This is also why I think cloud computing is a good thing: shared resources are gener
