As someone familiar with JS engine regex internals, those results are totally shocking to me. How can I try your example? In particular I wasn't able to figure out which regexes you are testing with.

> Add a step immediately after parsing the regex, check if it is regular and can be handled by an engine like RE2, otherwise handle it using the normal regex engine. This would be a bad idea. For one thing, it would be slower on non-path

Does the linear time hold up in the face of capture groups? For example, say you have a bunch of capture groups in a loop: /((a)|(b)|(c)|(d))*/ If the string has length N, the loop iterates N times, and each iteration mus

Odroid by HardKernel may fit the bill. Their XU4 is $59 and about 5x as fast as RPi3.

On LG OLEDs, when you press the Home button, there's a sidebar on the left that consumes about 1/5th of the screen with an ad. Free trial of Starz, that sort of thing.

I successfully squelched the ads in my $2k LG TV with a Pi-hole. Maybe I should have asked for more ads, they'd have given me a bigger discount.

Positive charges obey the right hand rule, while negative particles obey the left hand rule. Classical EM doesn't distinguish between these, and we might as well reverse the signs and hands. QM does so distinguish, for reasons way beyo

Well intervals by definition don't point anywhere, they're scalars! Relativity says: E^2 = m^2 - p^2 If we treat antimatter as normal matter moving backwards in time, with negative energy - then energy reverses sign, so an

In classical electromagnetism, we separate the electric field E and the magnetic field B. If we isolate E, we get rest: electrostatics. Charged particles exert an attractive or repelling force in proportion to their charge, just like gravit

It will! Imagine the ball right before it hits the ground: it will have a large downward velocity. Reverse time and the ball acquires an upwards velocity, that slows as it reaches your hand, exactly as if it's accelerating towards the

If earth is falling towards the sun it is due to higher order effects, like friction or gravitational waves. It's not due to gravity itself, which is time symmetric.

by ridiculous_fish 8y ago
No, gravity is time symmetric! Imagine throwing a ball up, and watching it fall back to your hand. Run the clock backwards and it looks exactly the same!

Meson and Ninja cannot handle "C, Perl 5, Python, Ruby, GNU Bash, XML, CMake, XSLT, XHTML5, XHTML1.1, Website META Language, JavaScript and more." One of make's great strengths is that it is so generic.

One of the strengths of JS is how the runtime environment can be dynamically interrogated and polyfilled, and how it can often gracefully degrade if there's a mismatch between static assumptions and runtime behavior. Is there a vision

The belt approach is sort of hybrid between registers and stack architectures. A disadvantage is that values on the belt may be at unknown locations after branches: var x = something(); if (somethingElse() { stuff(); } print(x

This is no doubt obvious to hardware folks, but one enlightening moment is when I came to understand register renaming. Previously I had the (wrong) idea that rdi, rsi, etc corresponded to physical bits. Register renaming involved some exot

This claim is too strong, because Rust can't reduce heap allocations to stack allocations. Java, Swift, and others can optimize apparent heap allocations into stack allocations. But (in my understanding) Box, Rc, etc. can never allocat

How does Go handle non-async syscalls these days? If you spawn a thousand goroutines which all call stat(), does this still spawn a thousand kernel threads? This took some of the bloom off the rose for me. For each goroutine I had to predic
