At good uk universities you get excellent guidance, with multiple intermittent milestones and ongoing scrutinisation of your progress. Unless you pick a rubbish supervisor who simply doesn't care. Though I only can speak of Oxford..

Sums it up beautifully! Though one should not underestimate the downfalls most encounter on the way, or the very real possibility of failure. I have never encountered higher highs and lower lows than during my phd. Though it has made me a b

The virus statement was a rethorical question.. Unfortunately it is not a real problem that users face. It's a problem that a very small minority has and that inconveniences the majority. If that's what you set out to do in life..

If IM would be solving a problem, I would agree. Unfortunately it is crapware. Crap. Ware. It is not solving a problem. It is making the world a worse place. Maybe they should start Investing into viruses?! where does this end? It's somethi

The downside of auto-downloading is that your tablet/phone will run out of battery much faster than on iOS. iOS has stand by times of weeks (31 days?), which is wonderful. My nexus 7 runs dry after days, arguably because of the apps I use,

Indeed. Their business model needs changing. It's not just price, it's also the fact that they don't offer as many flavours of SoC, aka with different basebands or integrated encoders, to even compete closely with the ARM ecosystem. Technic

The problem is that we don't have a choice. There's only one premium option to go for. And it's apple. It's surprising how none of the others have at least created a luxury brand, similar to Toyota/Lexus or Volkswagen/Audi.

Couldn't agree more. How about photos, something supposedly mainstream?! Have fun recreating all the events/albums/locations on each device. It's just a pain to deal with. Instead, I save my iPhoto library on Dropbox so that I can sync it b

I don't think you're getting the point he's made. Speed, price and quality will improve dramatically over time (we bought a £90k 3d printer a year ago that now has two subsequent successors). In fact the rate of development is almost scary

Couldn't agree more with this. What apple needs to do is not necessarily only innovate with features, but also with price. Otherwise they'll lose the market share (happening), devs won't prioritise iOS anymore, the iOS ecosystem advantage w

I don't think these guys know how complex and difficult this is going to be. They might have an SDK out this year, but chances are its pretty rubbish. Its not as if others haven't tried. And having written my PhD thesis on these things I kn

Couldn't agree more. As long as you find a consistent way of splitting and placing your "Controller" code, MVC works perfectly fine. The problem is that a "Controller" is only vaguely defined and always application dependent. However, findi

Final fantasy ticks all the boxes mentioned. And I'd say its as great a game as Zelda (though en large maybe not quite as "polished").

Or it could end up dead. No products = no development. No development = dead. WebOS will have exactly the same fate as so many great OS that had zero commercial backing, let alone products. Let alone that it'll fall massively behind the cur

Untrue. That is the one point that is currently making me swing towards the iPhone.. My current point&shoot produces worse pictures than either (in fairness, it's 3 1/2 years old). Two years of better pictures is an issue to me..

I'm unsure about this. So far it hasn't. And there has been plenty of "plentiful shit" at a cheap price point. The difference to the phone market is that the tablet market is (largely) un-subsidised and not coupled to a contract. It'll be i

My prediction: once this architecture is in the release channels, Intel is out of them. In a matter of years, Intel will be the dinosaur of microprocessors. Unless Intel also (re-)embraces ARM. Its simply a matter of price and configurabili

It's funny that these kind of long-term "features" don't get taken into consideration for any of the phone reviews. Its probably one of the most important features of a phone. I'm currently torn apart between buying an iPhone 4s and the gal

Wow. Very high salaries indeed. What I find particularly interesting is that the PhD's clearly have absolutely no incentive of staying in academia. I wonder how bad an effect this has on academia..

Interesting how the focus has shifted from performance / frequency to power consumption. I guess Intel is starting to get a bit of a scare of ARM's impending Cortex-A15 attack on the laptop space..

Nothing has changed in the short term, though lets hope that in the long term his successors can keep innovating as much as Apple has under Jobs. Most importantly though, I hope that Steve recovers soon from whatever might be ailing him. So
